Sometimes I read American teens say they really need a ride to (1) the cinema or (2) a gathering and my mind is just blown at what it must be like to grow up in car-dependence. The upbringing I had, taking buses and trains by myself since I was 7 years old, gave me so much freedom: to jobs, dates, meetings, school things. I guess that’s the point for some people, to not have those things for their teens.

@skinnylatte I miss seeing team buses. As a young athlete in the 80s I loved riding to out of town meets and games with teammates. Now, I walk by a soccer field and see more SUVs parked than I see players on the field. By contrast, today I saw the rare sight of a group of unattended teens cycling together on the path behind our place. I wouldn't have survived as a teen without that independence
