Managed to boot up my Raspberry Pi 4! It runs Python!
I didn't buy a display for it, so I hooked it up to my 49'' ultra wide monitor and managed to do a split display: one side of the monitor showing the Raspberry Pi, the other one for my MacBook pro.

Uggh I just updated to MacOS Ventura 13.5 and now it doesn't seem to support the 5120x1440 resolution anymore for my Ultrawide Samsung Galaxy Odyssey G9 monitor. 😡

Heads up @kojoidrissa and @davidism maybe hold back updating your MacOS version.

Here's an interesting problem.

You're going on a flight, it's 16 hours long (yes 16 hours non stop), and there are 5 people in your travelling party.
The seat configuration is 3x3x3: ABC DEG HJK

How would you seat your party?

I want to do C DEG H so we got 4 people with aisle access, means more mobility, you get to get up and walk and stretch your legs.

Husband wants to do EG HJK just so we could get one window seat.

🤷🏻‍♀️

Obvious things conference speakers should do:

  • submit a talk proposal
  • take a photo/selfie
  • write up bio
  • give the talk

Not obvious things conference speakers should do:

  • update email filter so emails from conference organizers don't end up in spam
  • when traveling, plan to arrive at Talk day - 2 days, in case of flight cancellations
  • show up at least 30 minutes before the talk slot, not 5 minutes before
  • use light mode presentation slides (light bg, dark text)

anything else?

Lenovo website.

I tried setting a password (generated using 1password) based on the specification. The password definitely has uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters, but the website validator wouldn't let me proceed.

After feeling frustrated, trying for more than 10 minutes, and also involving my husband to try it, we finally figured out the problem.

Before I reveal the solution, does anyone wanna guess why the form validator didn't work?

🚗 First winter road trip with our EV!
🏡 Port Moody ➡️ Golden, BC 🏔️🇨🇦
🛣️ 700 kms
🔋 Left home with 100%.
🅿️ Stopped to charge at Hope, Merritt, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, and Revelstoke.
🪫 Arrived at Golden with 32% charge.
⌛ 12 hrs on the road!
🤔 Definitely took longer than I like. Maybe we could have skipped charging at Merritt and Salmon Arm. We decided to charge often because it's our first time and unsure about it all.
📸 Pictured is our Ioniq5 while charging in Kamloops.

Tried to use the search engine to ask about "how to pronounce #"
but the search engine treated "#" as a comment and it tried to be "smart" and is telling me how to pronounce the word "to" instead.

I also tried "how to pronounce the # symbol", "the # sign", but it just tells me how to pronounce "symbol" or "sign"

In conversations with friends/professional colleagues, there's room for making mistakes. If I misspoke about something, I realized it the next day, I could correct myself and they'll accept that.

In job interviews, I find it there is no room for mistakes. If I misspoke, the interviewers take note of that and deduced: "she misspoke about this, she must not be prepared enough, great devs don't do that". I just never have the opportunity to correct myself after the interview.

Just me or normal?

I've always been bothered with the saying "code as if the next person maintaining your code is a violent psychopath who knows where you live".

Why are we instilling fear and promoting toxic behavior and workplace violence?

You should code so that you can take that beach vacation without having to be on call.
Code so that you have free time to be with your family.
Code (and document things) so that you can leave the project for something even bigger.

Just spent 40 minutes trying to help my mother in law with tech issue.

She needed to login to Microsoft Teams video call for her English language class. It's supposed to be in person today, but due to the snow, they moved to online class.

Here's what happened.

The setting: She uses iPad, the language is set to Chinese.
I understand some spoken Chinese, but I don't read Chinese characters (I know a few basic letters, maybe preschool/kindergarten-level letters 😥).
I'm an Android user.

Pro Tips:

  • stay near the conference venue, within walking distance (15 minutes max)
  • watch the talks and keynotes
  • but you don't have to watch ALL the talks. Take breaks
  • meet new people at hallway track, join new table at breakfast/lunch, introduce yourself
  • prepare an"elevator pitch" about yourself
  • don't need to pack too many shirts. Get t-shirt swag at sponsor booths at the expo hall (and socks)
  • sprint
  • volunteer
  • tell everyone you know to come!

Any other tips?

Dear event organizers, thanks for putting it all together, but please also state:

  • your time zone (and be explicit about "UTC+-???", instead of just "EST")

  • your event hashtag (is it # EventName?, or # EventNameWithYear?)

I didn't actually give a "talk" during 2023, but I did get onstage multiple times and faced like 2,000 people live 😱 (and maybe 700 online viewers) and told them about things. I don't know what that's called 🙃
Anyway, the slides are here:

Speaker said "I don't check this email address as frequently" as the reason for not responding to us on time.

But why... 🥲 Why didn't you not give the conference organizers the email address that you check more frequently?

Life hack that I learned from one of my professors long time ago. 20 years later, I still follow the advice.

When sending a file attachment to someone else, include your name in the file, and additional info too.

e.g. Instead of assignment1.txt do: mariatta_assignment1_cmpt123.txt

This helps them when the recipient needs to download similar file from various people.

I do this now when I upload files too, eg

Mariatta_Resume_for_CompanyX.pdf
mariatta_personalized_pricelist_for_you.pdf
etc

Working with other volunteer parents for our school hot lunch program.

I keep asking them to upload things to the Google Drive, but the only thing they wanna upload is the receipts.

Everything else, they just want to share "pictures".

Like I'm getting data, that are meant to be in spreadsheets, in the form of screenshots.

One other parent took a photo of their computer screen using their phone and texted it to me.

Is this how everybody else operate? Am I the techy-weirdo-nerd-mom? 😵‍💫
