The more I learn about of the Soviet Union, the more I realize just how much my native was actively stifled, prevented from developing and innovating, and forced into this image of a backwards and hopeless nation.

Our people have always been so phenomenal, talented, ambitious, kind, and creative. But theyā€™ve been punished, scared, and intimidated into a terrible subservient existence for so many decades and centuries.

I love Ukraine, but god history is unfair.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@menelion oh yeah. So so so many places.

I focus on learning about Ukraine because well Iā€™ve got a personal interest.

But there are similar stories all around the previously Soviet countries, China, North Korea, and so many others.

Btw this is often hard for me to explain to Westerns - Iā€™m politically on the left, but I never call myself a communist or a socialist and I do not align with people who espouse those views.

Itā€™s very hard to talk to people who quote Lenin and admire communist regimes without having lived there or having had their families killed by them for not falling in line.

Capitalism does, unfortunately, have a lot of good to it.

Like I resonate with arguments about consumerist waste, of course I do. We donā€™t need to buy new phones every year or get cheap clothes that fall apart after 2-3 months, or waste our money on software subscriptions for every single thing.

BUT. Iā€™ve seen the other side. When I was little my hometown still hadnā€™t really Westernized. I remember the day our first ever supermarket opened.

And a life without ANY consumerism is a miserable one.

Not having any choices in what to buy or own takes so much pleasure out of life.

I remember when we first moved to the Philippines, walking around giant supermarkets and toy stores and book stores and clothing stores with my jaw on the floor.

The colors, the possibilities, the methods for self-expression. I felt so free for the first time.

Maybe thatā€™s why I love marketing - I remember how cool I thought ads were.

If I were to force a label on myself, Iā€™d say I am left-leaning and support highly regulated capitalism.

Iā€™m against shareholder capitalism and pursuit of short-term quarterly profits, or the concept of stock buybacks.

Iā€™m against corporations dismantling unions and worker rights, or exploiting foreign resources, or greedy cost cutting in product quality.

But I am pro private business and entrepreneurship. Iā€™m pro long-term sustainable growth and economic prosperity.

Iā€™m not an economist so Iā€™m sure I am getting things wrong.

But my fundamental principle in politics and my life philosophy is the pursuit of long-term freedom and happiness for the largest number of people possible.

Some people need to be restrained because their greed and selfishness means their happiness costs too many others their freedom.

Corporations destroying the planet means short-term profit but long-term destroying freedom for us all.

Etc.

The flip side to ā€œEuropeans are lazy and donā€™t work hardā€ is that weā€™re able to maintain a modern society with a high standard of living while still being able to spend time with our families. And why kill yourself through overwork when most of the rewards go to somebody else, anyway?

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@baldur as someone who lives in the US and is externally living out the full ā€œAmerican dreamā€ I am sincerely jealous of the cultural difference between American and European work styles.

Rest makes us better at our jobs. Time off makes us more productive. Being with family and friends helps us be more creative.

There is literally no downside to a more balanced lifestyle, and while Iā€™m seeing people around me starting to buy into the idea we are still so far behind most of Europeā€¦

I admit I do often feel a bit weird as a leftist that lives near Wall Street

Then I think ā€œI occupied Wall Streetā€ and chuckle to myself

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@AdeptVeritatis I know haha I just like making fun of how Wall St is both a physical place and this symbolic term for capitalism

Agencies have figured out that "customized COTSā€ means "expensive custom software that you don't actually own,ā€ so vendors have started calling it "configured COTS." The problem is that some commercial software is extensively configurable by customers, and it can be tough to know which is which.

Here's the test to apply: Can the software be "configuredā€ by the customer or any vendor of their choosing? If "yes," it's legit. If "no," it's just expensive custom software that you don't own.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@waldoj do you have examples of both types of COTS?

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@waldoj thank you! Iā€™m not fully sure how Microsoft Word counts as a legitimate COTS but maybe Iā€™m thinking about it the wrong way

@waldoj aaah I kind of forgot that was a thingā€¦

Half the inbound leads we get these days just leave me with my jaw of the floor.

I would have never dared to send outreach to any of these companies because I thought we were too small for them. And here they are, one inbound call after another.

Our future seems very exciting aaaah

Take the time to grieve lost business relationships.

Colleagues, collaborators, partners, customers - all of these are still people who make a mark on us when we spend time together.

When those relationships end, itā€™s okay to feel sad.

Donā€™t shame yourself for hurting.

mariyadelano, to business
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

Don't start an agency if you hate service-based businesses.

It won't be your path to "passive income", endless riches, fame, or whatever else you're imagining.
You can't build a great company if you hate your own business model. No amount of productizing your services, outsourcing, playing voodoo with your margins, or pretending you're happy on social media will make up for your disdain of the very business you're creating.

Service-based businesses aren't a toy. Stop acting like it.
