This LinkedIn comment section is making me feel insane.

The poster is angry (rightfully so, I think) about a pretty bad cold email. I got the exact same email too, and this post validated my own annoyance.

But the comment section is attacking the post author?? Saying she doesn’t respect sales??

I launched a paid tier on my Substack today and my hands shook SO MUCH sending out that announcement last night.

I don't know why asking for money for a publication feels so much scarier than asking to get paid for consulting work

But I had to fight my impostor syndrome so much to even plan the paid tier, design the first series of post, and then even more to actually press send.

Cron, a calendar app owned by Notion, is now generally available (and free). Has some missing features (no iCloud integration) but it's been my daily calendar for months now and I recommend it https://cron.com/

This is an extreme example, of course. But it's from a report that NewsGuard published earlier today, exposing 49 sites.

They were publishing inaccurate and misleading news content seemingly created with little human oversight. Posting at a crazy cadence, up to hundreds of articles a day.

What's the point? Who's going to read this? Who's going to click on this?

I wonder if those sites are throwaways... it's hard to say without hearing from the people who run them. I assume it's more a passive income stream than anything.

I need to read that AI story, saved it for later.

For the YouScan link - haven't heard of this before, will take a look. Why are you disinclined to use their AI tool?

@searls Squarespace actually has very helpful guidance and templates for this. We used them as a starting point since our site is already there, but it would still be helpful even for your friend (just make sure to adapt as needed!)

Been thinking a lot lately about the conflict between:

  • Making the web more open and interoperable with APIs, data exports, and easier search functionality

  • The need for privacy and consent with opt-in defaults, protections against data scraping / mining, owned + siloed websites

These values seem fundamentally opposed to me, no? Am I missing something?
