Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised, secure communications. The Matrix.org Foundation exists to act as a neutral custodian for Matrix and to nurture it as efficiently as possible as a single unfragmented standard.

📣 We're currently seeking individual and organizational members to fund our work: https://matrix.org/membership

mttaggart, to Matrix

So I'm just a few days into running my server, and I have to say that doing any kind of public server that requires moderation seems like a very half-baked proposition right now.

Using any kind of bot for moderation—the only real option because bans do not propagate to all rooms in a "space,"—requires an encryption hall pass proxy that hasn't seen a commit in almost a year, despite several bugs. That's to say nothing of the awful state of documentation.

I'm soldiering on, but this is some classic open source nonsense. "Leave the easy proprietary platforms and just host your own thing! Here's no help at all, also this and that don't work. RTFM! Except the TFM isn't finished."

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@mttaggart We're glad you're giving it a try!

Yes, the state of trust & safety for homeserver admins is lacking. This is something the Foundation is prioritizing this year, both by investing in FOSS tooling, proposing supportive spec change, and convening stakeholders who work on this from across the ecosystem.

We'll be sharing more about this specifically on our blog in the next few weeks.

Please continue to be vocal about your experience, it helps us target our efforts!

Open source infrastructure must be a publicly funded service, and funders need to support maintenance – not just new feature development 📣

This is on our minds this week in the wake of the #xz news, and as we continue to seek funding to support #Matrix.

I'll repeat my old take on , and chat protocols.

These protocols are open, thus there is no reason to not make them interoperable.

In the end users dont care about protocol, they care about client. And users can choose any client they wish.

If all three can be seamlessly talk to each other, we'll have beautiful solution.

Even better if it can be done without bridges (or the bridges are built in to clients/protocols)

Instead of fighting over "the one true protocol" we should make them as seamlessly interoperable as possible!

We have zero excuse. These three (and probably more!) are all open.

I would love to help as well.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@aks @xmpp We are all in on interoperability.

We are far less worried about Matrix vs XMPP than we are about open and decentralized vs closed and centralized. We have far more in common than not.

Hey @matrix and @austin do you (or anyone) know if there's a general purpose Matrix community forum? The sort of place we can get help triaging problems with apps without bothering the devs with a plethora of issue tickets that turn out to be fixable at our end.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@strypey @austin We're aware of past efforts to create some general forums for Matrix but none that really attracted the critical mass needed to succeed.

For now, we recommend finding the relevant project's rooms on Matrix. There tends to be a lot of peer support that happens in those rooms, and indeed most issues end up resolved without escalating to opening issues on the project's repository.

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@strypey @austin Oh yes, absolutely. There have been some efforts along those lines in the past, but there were challenges resourcing it. Provided we are able to address our funding challenges, picking something like this up could well end up on our 2025 roadmap!

@matrix looking for how to get started…

  1. Is there a list of server instances? I only see the matrix.org recommendation on the website.
  2. Are bridges implemented and server dependent? I am deeply interested in the idea of federating all messaging through bridges.
  3. The Element client on the Apple App store indicates data collected like location, identifiers, etc. What is this used for?
matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@leoboulton Great questions, thanks for reaching out!

  1. We are working on creating a server picker featuring homeservers we feel confident recommending to new users, but don't have one currently. In the interim, you may find this project run by volunteers in the community to be of use: https://joinmatrix.org/
  2. Bridges are server-dependent, though there are some public bridges you can use regardless of your homeserver, such as t2bot.io.
  3. We'd have to direct that question to @element.

you know, i really want to like . i really do. in fact, it's the only group orient IM i use. but it's lack of decent mod tools is pathetic.

communities are being harassed with and and they can't do anything about it. i'm actually ashamed that i recommend it to people.

this isn't new, and they've lost huge communities to it. i'm actually fucking pissed. this should be number one priority, no excuses.

@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@xyhhx Thank you, we agree that the current state is not good and needs to change.

We are prioritizing Trust & Safety work this year, with improvements specific to Matrix.org homeserver as well as new FOSS moderation tooling for the benefit of all homeserver admins. We'll be sharing more about this on our blog within the next month or so.

@xyhhx Of note, we're also looking at forging partnerships with community members who spend a lot of time thinking and working in this space.

Our team is small and funding is meager, so we are moving as fast as we can – and do very much wish we could move faster. One way to do that is by collaborating with trusted people who are already volunteering in the space.

Addressing this issue well is key to our collective long term success. Thank you for being vocal about it!

@matthew @element

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@xyhhx We don't have a fully public roadmap yet but we're getting there!

We just launched a series of blog posts to explore that, and there will be a dedicated Trust & Safety installment as part of that series: https://matrix.org/blog/2024/01/2024-roadmap-and-fundraiser/

@josh @matthew @element

matrix,
@matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@stanford We will be taking an all of the above approach to addressing the issue – it does need to be addressed systematically for the whole open federation, and Matrix.org also needs improvement.

We are committed to decentering Matrix.org. We will maintain the server to ease adoption for new users, but plan to prominently feature other homeservers for users to join, and invest in account migration tools and account portability among other things.
