‘Pathetic’: what scientists and green groups think of UK’s net zero U-turn - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/20/scientists-and-green-groups-dismay-at-uks-net-zero-u-turn "UK not a serious player in global race for green growth, says Greenpeace, while Oxfam says move is ‘betrayal’"

midgephoto,

@glynmoody
Have they moved into break everything they can before going out of office mode, or is it the acquisition of directorships game?
Or straightforward traitorous work for foreign powers?

midgephoto,

@glynmoody I remember the last lot.

Net zero not at expense of ‘bankrupting the British people’, says Braverman - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/20/suella-braverman-net-zero-not-bankrupting-british-people stupid framing - it's not achieving Net Zero that will bankrupt people with the costs of heatwaves, floods, droughts and environmental refugees...

As to the legal matter, to borrow a useful phrase: he might be put to proof of that.

Well, Peripheral arterial disease isn't, i think, from vasospasm.
And the effects you point to seem to be acute, rather than chronic.

The magnitude and frequency of effects are significant.

If I were looking for subtle trouble, I'd look at the brain, which might be influenced in its development by a psychoactive chemical in childhood.
And at the wetware that runs on it.
Not at the chassis.

I never guessed when I started watching on that I would hear the very best insult in recent memory:

“You're a sperm led by its waving flagellum, mistaking its random motion for complexity.”

midgephoto,

@steveroy they have it a bit backward, but never mind. Would "driven" work less well on syllable count or implied intention?
The books lasted well, although I might need to reread them seeking that.

midgephoto,

@Double_A @PunnyName Firstly, we don't do that.
Secondly we vote where our neighbours are.
Thirdly a double vote has a high chance of being noticed.
Fourthly, there are few polls where ond vote would make a difference. The ones where it would/have get even more interest in advance and afterward.

@RaivoKulli @TWeaK if someone hands you 10 cans, they've handed you 10 cans. How don't you know?
They don't need tracking.

(If a store hands you 100kg of cans, they've handed you 100kg. Audit would need you to weigh them and know their name, but little else.)

midgephoto,

@TWeaK @RaivoKulli B12 consumption causing spinal cord degeneration is an issue.
Also N2O is a greenhouse gas, and supports combustion more effectively than pure oxygen, not very bad in small quantities and controlle,d spaces.

midgephoto,

@RaivoKulli Why wouldn't they be? If they sell a thousand cans they've paid a thousand deposits.
If they return a thousand cans they get back their thousand deposits.

The cans, as with R White's lemonade bottles once upon a time, are fungible.

They'll need a tin of pennies.

OK, got it. You can't tell Twitter users they're supporting fascism by continuing to contribute content to a Nazi bar dumpster fire. Apparently, doing so has a kind of reverse psychological effect that reinforces dopamine fueled addiction to the hate site.

So, we are just supposed to tell them how great Mastodon is. How engagement here is substantive and interesting. How people are actually nice and respectful. How no algorithm means users are in control. How social media can be so much better.

midgephoto,

@mastodonmigration "better" is comparative, no? Shall we tell them that this is good, and let people who conclude that something good would nice(r) wander over?

"Critical risk to life:" Sunak refused to fully fund repairs of England’s crumbling schools when he was chancellor, says ex-official (www.theguardian.com)

Amid a mounting political and educational crisis over schools built with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) from the 1950s to 1990s, the education secretary, Gillian Keegan, said it was still not known how many might be affected, and how many might need to close, with engineers still to inspect more sites.

midgephoto,

@tal @0x815 Or perhaps in some places when they build something in 1990 with a predicted lifetime of 30 years, say, they simultaneously write in the 2018 diary" get bids to replace X starting in next 2 years"?

midgephoto,

@tal @0x815 You might find it interesting to work from the opposite direction.
Look for schools or buildings being rebuilt or replaced, since 1990 or do, and then see how many of those had RAAC components.
IE the ros here is from not repairing and replacing, until an inconveniently large number of schools are collapsing or at large risk of collapsing, and the task exceeds the capacity of available labour, materials resources etc.

...

midgephoto, (edited )

@tal @0x815 ...Whereas if someone had seen it coming in other countries thry might have said "how long until it is dangerous"..."right, we fix 10% per year, finishing the year before that."

Which wouldn't really generate news stories of the alarming exciting sort we have.

"Government replaces school building" Spokesman says "it was wearing out."

steveroy, to ai

I don’t care much about the bandwagon, but I do strongly believe that calling what we have now artificial intelligence is a great exaggeration. We are nowhere near sentient, let alone thinking, machines. All we have is an incremental improvement in automation. We won’t be able to use it appropriately until we see it for what it really is.
