I wonder what laws prevent online apps like Libby from being able to facilitate library borrowing of films and music albums...

moose,

@salad_bar_breath @SallyStrange One thing I noticed about their "collections" is they are totally dependent on the backing library. I have multiple library cards from around the country and the offerings change depending on which one i sign in with. That being said, hoopla and kanopy both have great content!

Another day, another influx of spam! This time they’ve moved onto mastodon.world, so we’ve temporarily limited that instance. Hopefully we’ll see some better tools/protocols to prevent these kinds of annoying DM-based spam attacks sooner than later on Mastodon.

moose,

@adam Sounds like mastodon needs an "unknown senders" folder for notifications/messages (similar to how iOS filters calls/sms from unknowns)

Netflix resumes advertising on /X, another reason to drop that service NOW! - https://www.thewrap.com/netflix-resumes-advertising-x-elon-musk-controversy/

moose,

@lauren I like Netflix. I don’t think I will. Not everything is good or bad. Things can be both.

moose,

@wonka @lauren
1: Netflix is paid for by my T-Mobile plan. Literally no direct cost for me
2: me paying for or not paying for Netflix has 0 effect on their bottom line. Heck, even if all 9,000,000+ mastodon users boycotted Netflix that’s like, a drop in the bucket for them. They gain 9m subscribers per year, they’ll be back in 12 months to where they were before.
3: I assume the fascisim comment is towards X? Read my first statement. Things can be good and bad.

Went to a neighbor’s holiday party. It was so nice to just hang out with complete strangers, and my neighbors, who were complete strangers as well.

moose,

@odddev @allenu this may be my actual worst nightmare.

@Brownian_motion @cheeaun holy crap this app is amazing! Any plans to create native clients?

moose,

@cheeaun this is exactly what I did and it works quite well! Do you have a channel for feedback and suggestions? 😅

@feditips should I be boosting posts instead of liking/favoriting them? How do i A) let the author know I had a positive interaction
B) let others know I had a positive interaction

Are replies preferred? Still trying to figure out the cultural norms here.

What is the plan for social.lol federating with threads.net, is it something we're open to (until evidence supports a different decision)? I am really excited to be able to interact with threads users. If you're taking votes, I say let's stay federated @adam

moose,

@adam This is a great post, and i think it aligns with my views as well. I think de-federating from a platform just because there are a few bad actors is perpetuating the behavior that drove us to mastodon to begin with. I appreciate the response, and look forward to our continued experiment with threads and omg.lol!

    Okay , let’s get something straight. We are all grown ups here (hopefully) and can make choices for ourselves. We alive in a society that allows us the freedom to choose for ourselves what to do.

    Why would you allow or want to be part of an instance where they choose for you who or what to block? I understand that there are BAD people on , just as there are on EVERY platform on the internet.

    Give the regular people on each platform a chance to been seen.

    moose,

    @SallyStrange @kylewritescode I think I need to disagree with you. I don’t think it’s fair to expect the average meta user to jump into mastodon (or other fedi). It’s our job to educate people and show viable alternatives. If we block threads outright, we are no longer an alternative and the incentive to jump ship disappears completely.

    I don’t think blocking an entire platform is an effective form of moderation, and is in fact harmful for the reason mentioned.

    moose,

    @SallyStrange @kylewritescode

    I have been waiting years for something like this to happen. There are very interesting accounts on X and Meta I would love to interact with, but don’t want to create accounts in those platforms.

    moose,

    @SallyStrange @kylewritescode I don’t even know what that means, however, I try not to post things ON THE INTERNET that could get me fired.

    moose,

    @SallyStrange @kylewritescode a couple observations:

    1. isn’t it up to the individual users to decide who can see their content and who can follow them and who they follow?
    2. much of mastodon is open to the public ALREADY so how does this increase the existing risk given my points from 1?

    I’m happy to understand other people’s point of view, but it almost seems irrational to think this will be a net negative to the ecosystem. I think there are enough protections in place.
