There was a period in the first half of the 90s where straightahead/post-bop structures were married (successfully) to very vascular, propulsive rhythm sections, and this is no exception, from 1991:

Herbie Hancock: piano/keys
Wayne Shorter: saxophones
Stanley Clarke: bass
Omar Hakim: drums

Thanks AD for reminding me to revisit these gorgeous home recordings of the late Ethiopian nun Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. Recorded between 1977-1985, Souvenirs is as close to perfect as anything I've ever encountered. Check it out.

Grateful Dead: Summer ’73 (The Phil Jazz Jam)

I can’t say I have a general take on the sporadic performances from the summer of 1973… except for the luminous quality of the improvisation, featuring one of the great improv themes, The Phil Jazz Jam.

Is a thing? For obscure local history reasons I'm looking for a close font match for this.

Don't need the down arrow on the 'h,' but matching the variable width between vertical and horizontal lines would be clutch.

Closest I've got is Forgotten Futurist, which is barely adequate. Anybody else got ideas?

Boosts appreciated! :D

Thanks!

Cornell professor and all-around swell guy Jeremy Braddock has written a fantastic scholarly appraisal of the Firesign Theatre's classic albums and why they're important, as literature, innovative sound design, and surrealist brain candy. His research skills are impeccable - I've been listening to Firesign for decades and Jeremy's work here has me looking at their work in a totally new light. Coming in October, now available for pre-order!

nerds: I'm embarking on a home project and need about 250 ft of quality solid copper (or better) cable. Before I buy new, is anyone holding? Anyone with a half-used spool gathering dust in the garage? I'd much rather buy someone's leftovers. Thanks!

Yusef Lateef, "Mushmouth" (1976). Bass by (I believe) the great Anthony Jackson. This track is a lesson in advanced funk bass-playing. Jackson is completely out of control, in a good way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sAw-FQNnnY

AI clones of people are becoming a lot more common and a lot more worrying.

This one was taken down after Ali jumped through a bunch of hoops to prove her identity, but CivitAI currently only removes models if there is a complaint - they have no policy against creating models to impersonate real people.
