The most ridiculous thing about cop procedural shows is when they ask where a person was, and what they were doing at a specific time the person always has perfect and immediate recall. I'd be desperately trying to remember what day of the week that was, and trying to open my phone calendar. If I was the cop, I'd immediately be suspicious of the person who remembered exactly where they were and what they were doing.

mtheriaultsf,
@mtheriaultsf@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr Personal experience of someone close to me: Don’t even count on the cops to ask about the right month. That requires competence more available on TV. And they take away your phone before questioning.

My story “Volcanid” was accepted today by Persimmon Lit for its “menagerie” edition. It encounters a coyote in McLaren Park and a dog in the back of Muni’s 14-Mission bus - thus its claim to “menagerie - and has brunch in the Mission District and contemplates Quito, Ecuador and the Volcán Pichincha, which I trod decades ago. I’ll post a link here when it comes out online. Meanwhile my thanks to Editor-in-Chief Amanda Sun.

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

mtheriaultsf,
@mtheriaultsf@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr It was the TransAmerica route by bicycle, OR-VA. My wife and I had planned to ride it in 2020. We rode San Francisco-San Diego in 2019. Then the pandemic happened. With it came the Orange viciousness of calling COVID the “Chinese virus,” and my wife is of Chinese descent, and even when things opened up it seemed unwise to put our bodies on roads where an intentional “Oops” could end us. We’re old enough that if that ever ends it will be too late. Plus, I now have cancer.

@RickiTarr Ainsi va la vie. So goes life. Really, I'm a pretty happy guy, but no one goes without regrets.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

@RickiTarr I was 22 and the collapse of a relationship had landed me at my grandmother’s, where I slept on the floor. Thrifty paysanne, she did her washing in an old wringer machine that let her use the same water for more than one load. Once she washed the living room curtains before my underwear. In this way I learned two facts in a day: The living room curtains contained fiberglass; going to work in undershorts imbued with fiberglass means a day of torture for one’s nethers.

Hello! I want to do a Spooky Picture Prompt! So, find a picture in your camera roll that would represent the phrase:

Last Picture on the Camera Roll

This should be spooky, but completely up to your own interpretation. Here's one from me, with weird eclipse light.

mtheriaultsf,
@mtheriaultsf@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr Not spooky, but….

It came close in fact to being the last picture on the camera roll (weakened by radiation therapy, I fell down the stairs in my house, landed on my forehead, and fractured three vertebrae in my neck) but almost two years later I’m still here.

After a couple days they told me I shouldn’t ride the bike to sessions any more. They had reason.

This hits a buncha spots for me: Semicircle of darkbearded guys garbed for physical work (although, guys, you could be dirtier) singing a capella (+some percussion) in French and Occitan in a space devoted to the most classic of classic bicycles.

And they're good.

(I knew one of these from a Vent du Nord recording and sang along with what voice I still have.)

    Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

    I'll start:

    One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

    @mtheriaultsf@mas.to avatar

    @pluralistic I once negotiated a multiunion contract for a major construction project, and one of the tougher clauses on which to find agreement was the role of trades in installing works of art, some of which certainly would employ construction methods and skills. I said Oh, and the Plumbers want to know if there will be anything by Marcel Duchamp.

    Turned out this required explanation, even to the Plumbers.

    Today in Labor History February 4, 1979: Six workers were killed by police in the massacre of Cromotex, Lima Peru. The workers had taken over the factory after it went bankrupt and its owners tried to close it down. Led by a hardline revolutionary, Hemigidio Huertas, workers armed with sticks took the premises over. They held out for a week, killing a police captain in the process. When police later stormed the factory, they killed six workers including Huertas. One of the survivors, Nestor Cerpa, was arrested and jailed for 10 months. After his release, he went underground and started to organize the MRTA, or Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.
