Curious when you just declare a neighborhood a "BAD IDEA" and buy out everyone and make it into a park. This has been a landslide area for A VERY LONG TIME, and homes should never have been built there (IMHO). https://laist.com/news/rainfall-accelerating-land-movement-in-rancho-palos-verdes

@ai6yr These situations, it gets harder and harder to get insurance, and when a property isn't insurable it's not worth much. We stayed at an amazing massive beach rental in Hawaii and it was cheap because the whole area was DOOMED. Weird neighborhood of people who DGAF. A few years later it's all under lava rock.

You have to hope the insurance and reinsurance markets will be able to weather this. har har.

It’s complicated and it’s not meant to be a hot take but the airport at Christmas is one of my favorite things.

Based on this location, it appears someone has called in someone (likely) selling either flowers or tacos on the side of the road. (wasn't listening, so didn't hear what). 🙄 (team here, but live in the suburbs).

@ai6yr We have a real problem with vendors pouring grease and food into the gutters & storm drains. One guy I know takes his dog out to feed on the scraps they leave behind on the regular.

I talked to a restaurant owner who thinks she may have to suspend dinner service, but she's scared to make a formal complaint because it's a big operation and they're not super nice.

"Once hailed as a drought fix, California moves to restrict synthetic turf over health concerns" https://calmatters.org/environment/2023/10/california-synthetic-turf-pfas/

@ai6yr What strikes me is how many people in my neighborhood have artificial turf, because it suggests they have more yard than they really want. The houses around me, built in the 50s and 60s, have big front yards. Lots of people don't want to mow or water sod, nor invest time and money in more appropriate landscaping.

Do you ever think about abandoned tech trees? Like how no one is working to design better drafting compasses or vellum? No one is perfecting vacuum tubes. No one is laser focused on methods to speed paint and accurate portrait by hand to send out for marriage proposals.

Technological leaps make entire areas of research pointless— but

What if just a bit further down the line on the old tech tree there was some bigger breakthrough we’ll never see? I think about this A LOT.

mxjohnson,
@mxjohnson@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@futurebird Yeah, other types of combustion engines. Passive cooling architecture, sustainable farms, pest mgmt, alternatives to plastics, sidetracked by technological/material advances. Sure, there's some work going on, but imagine a 1900 dust bowl followed by 120 yrs of topsoil management, and where we'd be now. Or a powerful anti-plastic revolt in the 1950s. How much labor-saving technology wasn't developed because enslaving people was the norm in so many economies for so long?

"The Pentagon's stated goal is that all bases be "power resilient." The best path to resilience in case of a disaster is often a local renewable source... That will keep key defense capabilities intact in the case of an attack on the U.S. power grid, or more likely an extreme weather event, as climate change worsens droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and storms." https://www.npr.org/2023/10/02/1201838599/military-microgrids-climate-change

mxjohnson,
@mxjohnson@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr The electrical infrastructure isn't it great shape at NBVC. Resilient would be great but adequate would be a step up. They may have no option but to figure out a way for SCE to take it over. Next spring I'll be in DC with a bunch of other volunteers lobbying on this one. The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division is at Mugu, operating a sea test range and the Electronic Warfare Technical Center. It's one of the most tech-heavy installations out there.

@ai6yr Himalayan bunnies, the color of the fur depends on temperature, so where it's dark that's where the skin is colder. You can shave an area and apply an ice pack and the fur there will grow back darker.

I hate advertisements so much.
This is the main reason I don't have cable. I couldn't wrap my brain around the concept of paying for content full of ads.

I paid for youTube premium but I'm about to give up on that too since you may skip the inserted ads there are still all of the sponsors. And I can't be mad at creators for wanting to make some money but I really need to escape these ads.

Because ads work -- most people assume they don't but they do. They change you.

mxjohnson,
@mxjohnson@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@futurebird people are always like, ‘I was talking to my friend about Junior Mints and an hour later I saw an ad for Junior Mints! My phone is spying’ not realizing the Junior Mints ad had already been served to them a dozen times. They never noticed it but when their friend says they went to a movie, they’re like, you know what I love about going to the movies? Buying a big box of Junior Mints!!!

Do you think "mind uploading" will ever be possible?

This is some scenario where a human mind is copied and modeled digitally.

This isn't a ship of Theseus situation where a brain is slowly replaced over time.

mxjohnson,
@mxjohnson@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@futurebird A static brain could be a copy of a static brain, but brains are never static. You'd notice if you suddenly had better memory (or worse), if how you felt after smoking weed and listening to music was different.

I once tried a small dose of Prozac and it was one of the worst days of my life. A reconstituted brain could be so much worse.

@Popehat Hey I moved to Mastodon when you did.
I need a litigator with First Amendment, public law, maybe defamation experience in California. I don't care where. I do need somebody ASAP. I'm Councilmember in Ventura & in deep shit for the tone I used at a meeting when I was uncovering misuse of public funds. Now some of my colleagues are defaming me. On Monday council voted to require I make an apology. WHICH THEY GET TO VET.

A referral to anybody who could start this week would be great.
