Pondering "dead man's handle"...

Ideally kicked by something I normally do, even if just accessing a web site.

Has warning levels to me if my behaviour naturally changes not to kick it.

Probably needs something like a month of warnings to finally kick...

Then what?

Every E-paper sign I have made does "dead queen" style image for me?

Script to post AI generated mastodon, X, and Facebook posts "as me, from the grave"?

Even random AI spoofed calls?

Possibilities are endless!

nicr9,

@revk your dead man's handle (DMH) should provision a second DMH in the cloud!

If your loved one's respond to the pranks by disconnecting your home servers that should trigger your cloud DMH which could result in angry phone calls from your "uploaded consciousness" threatening retribution ๐Ÿ˜‚

It is Tue 30th Jan

When is โ€œnext Fridayโ€?

[boost boost boost]

nicr9,

@revk

Feb 2nd: "Friday"
Feb 9th: "Friday week" (as in Friday plus a week)

Haven't seen this expression used by anyone else since I moved to Canada but I'm sticking with it, it does me well.

Stop using "next Friday" if it's not clearly conveying your intentions! Embrace linguistic utilitarianism ๐Ÿ˜‚

When me and the wife moved to Vancouver (we left Ireland a few years ago) there was an Irish pub in our neighbourhood. They had nice food and a patio so it was perfect for lunch the odd weekend.

Most of the cultural references missed the mark. We would laugh off some of it but we were pretty offended by the "Black and Tan Onion Rings" on the menu...

nicr9,

@gavgraham @jannem @angusm @cstross @slowtiger @adriano

I wouldn't mind half as much if it was any other dish... I like getting onion rings, I don't want to feel like my order is some kind of endorsement ๐Ÿ˜‚

Not beeing at @hackaday doesn't mean to not play arround with the badge. I just needed to assemble this nice green one (pcb made by @aislerhq) myself. After some debugging it is now running! As far as I am aware this is also the first green one.

nicr9,

@tinyledmatrix @hackaday @aislerhq I didn't realise that non-attendees could get their hands on one... Is it available as a kit?

nicr9,

@tinyledmatrix @hackaday @aislerhq this is awesome, there's older badges here too!

Something to save for a rainy day (bom prep not withstanding)

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD stateโ€, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", โ€œahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commitโ€, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

nicr9,

@b0rk OoooOOOooo, I feel like a new zine is in the making...

nicr9,

@b0rk yeah, git's such an expansive subject. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being longer than other zines or a multi-part series.

I could imagine a git box set on my shelf next to Your Linux Toolbox

What food tradition do you think is the best at taking shitty ingredients and making something really tasty?

nicr9,

@Doomed_Daniel @ZachWeinersmith yes, indeed.

The whole point of Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Tuesday) is to get some basic items out of the pantry before lent begins so people aren't tempted. Can't get more basic than the ingredients for pancakes.

When I was in college I invented my own holiday! Waffle Wednesday was the day after Pancake Tuesday and I'd prepare waffles for anyone on campus who was interested. I called it the atheist holiday because it was the first day of temptation ๐Ÿ˜‚

petergleick, to random

As more mainstream media open accounts here on Mastodon, try to follow them. As they build up audiences here, it will make it easier for them to abandon that Xhit site over there.

Does anyone have a list of good media accounts here?

nicr9,

@petergleick I half agree with you...

For some people, the reason they're on the bird site is because of that real-time news/updates and when more news sites find success here that's undeniably good. More of that please.

But... A lot of news sites are trained to operate on social media platforms in a certain way to leverage the algorithm and maximise engagement. I don't necessarily think it's always a healthy way. If you're looking for an example; the way the media promotes Trump because he DRIVES engagement.

One of the things that makes Masto different from the big players is the lack of focus on an algorithm. It's harder, no doubt, but I like how it leads to more genuine conversation and interaction between users.

I don't think we should unquestioningly reward news sites with our engagement unless they're specifically meeting our needs and their behaviour contributes to the positive culture here. Let them figure it out on their own, the ones that do will do just fine here.

The @hackaday Superconference bonus event is GOOOO!

This is an extra day on the beginning of where a bunch of us degenerates ride the Coast Starlight down to LA instead of flying. I get on in San Jose, but others got on in Oakland, as well as a big group last year who got on in Portland the day before and got an EVEN EXTRA 24 hours of hacking on a train.

This is an informal event, so you just need to make sure you end up on the right train, which is the southbound arriving at LA Union Station on Thursday night, 11/2. The train arrives in LA around 9-10PM, in time for either a late dinner or going straight to your hotels.

Last year I recommended business class since that would ensure that we all ended up in the same car and had access to the diner car, but due to current equipment shortages Business Class is unavailable, so I'm getting a coach ticket. We spent essentially the whole day last year hanging out in the lounge car, so coach vs private room class doesn't matter. I'd recommend packing your own meals if you're in coach, since the diner car only offers meals to coach as capacity allows, and none of the food options on the train are very good. I usually pick up a Subway sandwich on the way to the train station.

nicr9,

@kwf @hackaday alas I won't be at Superconference this year but I feel like it'll be worth taking the scenic route to get there next time I get the chance!

How come no one hacks on trains where I live? ๐Ÿ˜”

nicr9,

    Python programmers: do you habitually use pipx to install new tools written in Python?

    nicr9,

    @simon I'm going to need to test this later with ansible's pip module...

    It's got a param for executable path so I may be able to trick it to using pipx instead which would be neat!

    A lot of my time spent working on my started as an excuse to work on my config management skills.

    I try very hard to keep all the important stuff coded in playbooks . Recently I've been trying to switch things up and run services on instead of bare metal so I'll be toying with a lot more.

    I've noticed a lot of people in the fediverse talking about their adventures in . What are you using for CM?

    nicr9,

    @ferki

    My approach is pretty similar.

    I've found that for long-term projects (especially professional stuff) that it's a lot like tackling a monolith->microservices transition. Starting with a simple proof-of-concept helps iron out everyone's understanding of how the pieces are supposed to fit together.

    After this initial success I prioritise which pieces to tackle next based on return-on-investment. Which pieces of automation would provide the most value?
