@ShredderFeeder Speaking as somebody who did that, the number of thousands of dollars it costs to install a decent charger in your garage is "0.7" and it pays for itself in a few weeks.
@mcc me thinking about using systemd: "I don't understand why people are so mad about this, launchd is better than sysv init, this is just launchd for linux, I guess they couldn't just port it because some low-level stuff is different but I'm sure it's basically the same"
me actually using systemd: "fuck fuck what is this shit what the fuck why didn't they just actually port launchd to linux, there's no excuse for this"
@glyph it's extra weird because whenever I read the description of how a thing is architected in systemd I go oh, that's pretty reasonable, that's a good way to do it. And then I use it and I just doesn't live up to what I expected, either because of some horrible gaping sore in the UX or because they constrained the functionality to some really narrow case (I assume, something RHEL asked for) and didn't anticipate even slight generalizations of the use case
Israel spent over a decade spying on ICC prosecutors to "retroactively investigate incidents of interest to ICC to prove Israel’s legal system is accountable."
Meanwhile Israel has banned all journalists from Gaza and has killed 100+ journalists. This is totally what you do when you're not guilty of war crimes.
#Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection w/a #HushMoney payment made to a porn star to influence the 2016 election. The case could be in the jury’s hands as early as Wed.
#Steinglass says that #Trump’s #intent to #defraud could not be any clearer, arguing that Trump could have simply paid #StormyDaniels himself, but instead devised an elaborate scheme to pay Daniels secretly that required the involvement of at least 10 other people. “Everything Mr. Trump & his cohorts did in this case was cloaked in lies,” Steinglass says, adding, “The name of the game was concealment, & all roads lead to the man who benefited the most, Donald Trump.”
I'll never forget the way the tech industry was sacrificed to counter inflation
Nov 2022: The Fed minutes show they want increased unemployment to stop inflation (1st pic)
June 2023: Bernanke and Blanchard say the labor market will have increasing influence of over inflation, and the Fed should continue slowing the economy (2nd pic)
May 2024: Where we are now, and tech roles are still rare. The few openings that exist still receive thousands of applicants
@sqrt2 you think that's all they do? history tells a different story over and over and
over. you'll find important recent lessons both in the 2008 crisis and the management of SVB's collapse.
worth digging into, but without that there is no need for me respond further. ✌️
@jmsdnns If the American tech sector is uniquely vulnerable to making borrowing money more expensive that says a lot about the American tech sector and very little about monetary policy.
Sitting at my desk just now tidying up and outside I see a woman runner, totally decked out, Air Pods, Nikes, fancy long distance running vest, stop in mid stride and suddenly look down, then look around, then down again. I’m thinking is she okay? Did she hurt her leg or something? I start to stand up as she basically collapses to the sidewalk on her knees, and I realize she’s TAKING A PHOTO OF A SNAIL.
I mean I don’t know her but she is clearly a quality individual with excellent priorities.

People ask ask me, “Where’s the innovation in video games nowadays?”
Certainly, it’s not with AAA titles. It’s with indie games. And more likely indie games on PC.
Take, for example, Bots Are Stupid. This is as innovative as it gets. And it doesn’t come by its innovation through fancy graphics or sound.
Instead, its innovation comes through code.
This is a precision platformer starring robots. Rather than moving your robot directly through any keys, you must code your robot’s movement. That is, you must precisely type out the actions your robot must make in order to beat each level.
Putting an emphasis on code makes this a deep and rewarding experience. Half the fun is typing in variables and values and seeing what happens to your robot. Believe me, when you beat a level, you feel a huge sense of accomplishment because you wrote all the code to make it happen.
Bots Are Stupid isn’t only fun, it’s educational too. While it doesn’t teach you any specific coding languages, it nevertheless teaches you a pseudo-code that familiarizes you with the basics of programming. And the code is quite approachable too!
If you want to teach your kids how to code, getting them to play this game is a good entryway into the world of programming. Or if you want to learn how to code but do so in a fun and interactive way, you might very well love Bots Are Stupid.
What makes this especially engaging are the tutorials that familiarize you with the code. They teach you how to code step-by-step, and then show you demos for how your robots move.
The graphics are simple and adorable. The music is whimsical. And I found the interface to be incredibly friendly.
When I think of games that are only possible on PC – and when I say PC, I mean PC platforms in general – Bots Are Stupid comes top to mind. Because you need to code, a keyboard is essential. I don’t think this can be adapted well to mobile or console platforms.
This entire game was developed by Leander Edler-Golla, who programmed it by himself. To date, this is the only game he’s made. I hope he makes more because I love the idea of coding to play a game. Frankly, it’s an ingenious idea.
What’s even more awesome is that Bots Are Stupid comes with a level editor. Yeah, I’ve seen level editors in many games before. But it’s even more awesome when the game is controlled through coding. Giving me a level editor makes me feel that I have true ultimate power!
So where is the innovation in video games nowadays? It very much exists. If you want it, you got to explore indie gaming.
Okay, a bit more on the #thermalPaper printing front, in case you enjoyed my #ToyCamera tootz and pics.
I received the cheap printer ($12) I wanted to play with. It's like the toy camera, but without the camera part. You can send things from your phone - text and images. Fun.
I’ve run a business, I know how important advertising is, but dammit, agencies whose entire existence is based on selling advertising space, can get in the sea.

Many people think Bill Gates' story is a rags to riches tale. Those people are sorely mistaken. I know this because I spent a few years working next door to the Mary Gates III research hospital (a nearly kilometer long building) at the University of Washington, named after his well-known mother.
