"Do you support unicode?"
-"Yup"
"But all text in your app is just an array of bytes."
-"Yeah, we can store anything with that."
"How are people supposed to read it?"
-"Oh, that's a UI issue, not on us."

Descent 3 source code has been released. And as a time honored tradition, let's look for curse words.

Icelandic phone numbers are 7 digits.

5xx-xxxx is usually Reykjavik (and surrounding area)
555-xxxx is usually my old home town (Hafnarfjörður)

Which means when movies go "555-1234" or something, then that's an actual phone number in Iceland.

When movies do this, I'll often look up the phone number in the Icelandic phone book.

Movie: "Yeah, my number is 555-xxxx"
Me: "Nope, that's a dentist in Iceland"

My Doom in Space project was written about in a Norwegian Tech Magazine. If you have access to it and wanna practice your Norwegian you can read it here (subscription or login paywall)

Don't write code with if statements. You shouldn't be asking questions, you're the boss. Tell the code what to do. Be assertive! Be confident! No doubts, no fear, just code!

Tusky as a mobile mastodon app is fine, how it loads notifications it seems to be that it loads N notifications you haven't seen, and when it's done it loads the next N, etc.

Which as a method of loading notifications is fine, until you have a popular post and you have to slog through 10-20 notification loads, each with a few seconds of delay.

Working on a feature, trying one approach, it's not working well.

I go do something else for a couple of days and then come back to it to try another approach.

"Ok, to do this approach, it would be really nice to have a function that does X. Oh wait, it already exists?"

I made it... in approach one..

Baldur's Gate 3 people.

Why is there a fully second's delay from when you hold click to move and the character moving

If you click the ground it's a bit faster but still there's this inherit delay. It's running smooth otherwise

Where can I turn it off? Nothing on PCGamingWiki.

I'm not 100% sold on the whole apple vision plus thing, but this is a cool use for it.

Put timers on top of objects and they stay there while you move around.

If I want simple non invasive web analytics what would you recommend?

Currently using google analytics and I feel it's too much sometimes.

I've been programming since forever and running a DB update query always freaks me out a bit.

Double check? No, quadruple check, and run the query in a temp DB first to also make sure.

But am I still sure? No.

Not this again.

This is not a memory efficiency thing!
WhatsApp is not storing the group size variable as an unsigned char. Because that only goes to 255.

It's just an int and there's a programmer that finds the number 256 to be neat.

How do I know? This is an old story. Current limit is 1024.

I can't believe an Icelandic newspaper did this pun.

To explain it:

  • Probably in Icelandic is Líklega.
  • There's a common phrase that is used to mean "probably": "ef að líkum lætur" (in all probability can)

Also:
Lík means corpse.

An article about a morgue closing used that phrase as the title.
"Closes this summer in all probability"
"Closes this summer if all corpses can"

Anytime English speakers talk about the Nordics having long weird words, I remind them of the word "Defenestration" (the act of throwing someone out of a window)
