Microsoft stoops to new low with ads in Windows 11, as PC Manager tool suggests your system needs ‘repairing’ if you don’t use Bing

Is there a name for malware that's also an OS?

@volpeon This reminds me of the story about a customer complaining about a "virus" that was creating a huge file on their computer called netscape cache.

Idea:

Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@aprilfollies @_L1vY_ @Uair @bookstodon A lot of science-fiction, literary science-fiction, is a variety of surrealism. That can manifest as space opera but also as dystopian critiques, meta-fiction, and various sense and nonsense. Science-fiction as fiction about scientific fact or speculation is a pretty narrow slice of the genre.

Interesting reading: "...what everyone—literally everyone—is missing about the 34 felonies Donald Trump committed to win the 2016 presidential election. This will change how you understand the 2016 election cycle."

@GottaLaff This says more Americans voted for Trump, which isn't actually the case. He won the EC but lost the popular vote, and not by a small amount.

I'm regularly confused why anyone, especially parents of Autistic children, would think ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) is a good thing.

Sure, it might make your child compliant at moments when you want to do show-and-tell with your "friends", but you will be generating lifelong trauma.

@russellmcormond @actuallyautistic ABA has a very bad history. In the current day, the term is less specific in meaning. I would tell anyone before starting to ABA to sniff them out and see what their program actually looks like. In my area there are zero non-ABA behavioral therapists, and my low verbal ability adult son does need support. I guess call it, living under a regime.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@sal @actuallyautistic @russellmcormond I do my best to interpret his needs, and to respect his wishes. However, he does need help with things like understanding not to play with the stovetop, and not to eat things which contain soy, to which he has an allergy. Proper masturbation etiquette, and such. His needs of course, are his needs.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@sal @actuallyautistic @russellmcormond Certainly I would advocate that an autistic person with strong verbal skills and some good self-support skills should be in talk therapy, not ABA or anything like that. I don't believe in enforcing any kind of masking or interfering with someone's interests or past-times.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@russellmcormond @actuallyautistic He has received extensive diagnostics, has participated in genetic research re: autism, has been in special ed for years. As to proper masturbation etiquette, probably don't whip it out in the living room and go to town.

Like, I don't want to be judgy, but the owners of an RPG with a 40yo publishing history, explaining to me why they can't afford good cover art for the latest edition, makes me a little agitated.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Oh, you want me to name names? Hmm.
All right. It's Rolemaster. They have a brand new edition, it's platinum on Drivethru, and it is one of the ugliest RPG products I have ever seen.

@Da_Gut @Tim_Eagon It's really more that they are in business AGAIN. Through a series of mergers, someone owns it, and they've reclaimed the ICE name. And yes, it's pretty detailed, but focused.

I see stuff I'd boost except for the fact that it uses ableist framings like "insane" for capitalism, greed, etc.

Learn to call it what it is. The reason insanity is a legal defense is because it is a mental disability one does not choose that affects one's ability to judge.

That is not the case with what many "progressives" are labeling "insane". Find non-ableist and more accurate ways of labeling what billionaires are doing.

I kind of hate Internet arguments, because they often inevitably lead to a juncture where I find myself arguing with someone who does not know a single thing about what they are talking about, and I end up being backed into a corner and having to justify my expertise. And then ...

Class reductionist anti-identity politics "leftism" is some of the whitest, most worthless shit possible, and I've never seen one of these guys who wouldn't turn to the dark side if the fascists only offered him enough money.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@fifilamoura @gwynnion Identity politics isn't ideological, it's a description of reality, and denying the reality of POC and people of marginalized gender is harmful. The oppressor first bludgeons you for your identity, then when you resisted the attacks, says you can't have it.

I was talking with a biochemist friend of mine about hydrofluoric acid used in glass etching. She was outraged at it being used by someone outside a laboratory setting. I was like, okay, but doesn't some fluoride naturally produce hydrofluoric acid, like the same stuff you put in your teeth? And she was like, "I don't put that in my mouth."

I swear to god allistics should not be allowed to write surveys. Allistics probably think this is a totally reasonable question, which will provide useful numbers.

BUT, if my "expectation" of Xfinity customer service is "absolute crap", then a 3 means "absolute crap" and a 5 might mean "passable".

Why do allistics have so much trouble writing questions that actually get the data they want? I see this 🐄💩 ALL the time.

pawsplay,
@pawsplay@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi But they don't care about the quality of service, they care about your emotional reaction to it. People are motivated by being delighted or disappointed, not by some objective measure of success.
