One of my friends pointed out that Bible stories sound exactly like Florida Man Headlines!

Example:

Florida Man Starts Building Ark, Says God Is Going Flood The Whole Earth

PLEASE, add your own Florida Man Bible Headlines for everyone's amusement!

Okay, what movie/TV show/ book has the best take on time travel and why?

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr I just finished This Is How You Lose The Time War so it’s juuuuuust possible that I’m biased lmao

🧵 So I… challenged a book in my today. Jordan Peterson was involved and it was promoting limiting access to gender affirming care with attendant transphobic beliefs. I’m also not sure how I should have handled it as someone who is both and about to go to a MLIS program. The library does not have things like The Turner Diaries, David Duke’s oeuvre, or the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, so there must be some kind of policy against discriminatory literature….

A very clever friend suggested this question and I thought it was great:

Do you feel like your life experiences have crystalized and focused what you believed when you were younger? Basically, same beliefs, just better understood. Or have you radically changed as a person over time? My own addendum is if you feel like explaining why, I'm always curious to know!

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr I was always a liberal because I felt like something was missing in my life and the world and I had to work through a lot of pain before I could say those things were respect and compassion. Once I could name it and give it to myself I could give it to others easier so I became more radical.

Religious beliefs have been all over the map, I got into some really toxic new age stuff for a while and had to have a rock bottom moment before I realized how bad it was

Do you think voting should be mandatory?

BE NICE!

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr No. I can see the edgelords who might not otherwise bother being forced to vote and voting the most offensive candidate on offer for the lulz. If people want to vote I at least know they have an opinion. I might not like it, but they’ve got one

I'm feeling a Theme Day coming on! Since I've already started in on Magic, let's go for it. I'm gonna do a couple posts involving Magic today, but please share any Magical Moments you've had, a poem or bit of literature about Magic that you wrote or just enjoy, a toot you've written about Magic, a piece of art that makes you feel Magical, anything really, I love to see/hear/read your interpretations of things. I'm going to share a Magic Moment I had recently:

My husband and I had taken a short weekend trip recently, and honestly, it was kind of a mess, the rental wasn't as advertised, and our car got towed that morning, and we had to take an Uber and spent $300 getting it out of impound. When we got back, we just wanted a nap, I suggested we both take half an edible since we were both on edge, when we woke up it was moving into evening. I told my hubs to forget all the crappy stuff and let's just try to enjoy our evening. So, we had some pretty great sex, and then we wandered outside, and they had set up a Jazz Festival almost right outside the door. We listened to a couple great Jazz bands, danced a little, and watched the sun starting to set. Eventually, we could tell some rain was starting to blow in, so we walked around the corner to a cocktail bar. It was one of those with a big garage door in the front. So we sipped some cocktails and ate pizza, while watched the storm blow in. When the rain slowed down, we walked back to the apartment in a light drizzle, and generally felt better about life.

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr Deep in the SC mountains, my 4H group went trail riding. I was not good at horses and got matched with a horse that knew perfectly well that it could just amble any old place at any old speed and it would still get fed. The rest of the group was out of sight and earshot. I wasn’t too worried until we went off the path. Lost. Hot. Thirsty.

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr Then we come to a clearing where the kudzu has grown over the edges of the trees like walls and stretched over the empty space to make a ceiling. The sun shone through the leaves and made them glow. It was like being inside an emerald. A perfectly clear pool with water flowers. Tolkien would’ve eaten his heart out. Eventually I heard the rest of the group and we joined back up, the horse had cut across a trail loop. But I’ll never forget that place to my dying day

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊

phoenixashes76, (edited )

@DocCarms @bookstodon “It was a pleasure to burn” from Fahrenheit 451 has got to be up there. But for sheer comfort value my very favorite is “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”

Edit because I had to look up the exact wording but the very best is: “To be born again,” sang Gibreel Farishta tumbling from the heavens, “first you have to die. Ho ji! Ho ji! To land upon the bosomy earth, first one needs to fly… how to ever smile again, if first you won’t cry?”

phoenixashes76,

@ukaunz @DocCarms @bookstodon ok that just went on my list. I know nothing about it but I gotta see where that goes lol

@ukaunz @bookstodon @DocCarms I LOVE Good Omens. Haven’t seen the second season yet but I’m looking forward to it

When I am god-emperor, all university Web sites will be required to make basic information like departments, academic programs, faculty, and catalogs actually findable without resorting to Google.

phoenixashes76,

@inquiline @tkinias not to mention Google has gone so far downhill that I had to spend two hours this morning figuring out the deadline to apply for graduate school because everything the search engines were spitting out was “deadline to apply to graduate.” Vive l’empereur!

OKAY, before we go full fall, an ice cream question!

I found this little gem in the ice cream section, so I'm wondering what's the weirdest ice cream flavor you've ever tried?

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr Violet. I didn’t like it, it had kind of a sharp taste.

The same place had rose and pistachio, though, and the best triple decker I ever had was rose/chocolate/pistachio

Some interesting statistics:

In 1900, people spent 43% of their income on food.

In 1950, 30% of their income on food

And by 2019, 9.5% of their income on food

Why do you think the gap is so huge?

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr are we guessing? I’m betting on refrigeration. I can buy a gallon of milk and it’ll last me a week or two. My great grandparents would have bought pints on a daily basis. If they were lucky they had a spring house and a root cellar but not everybody did

phoenixashes76,

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I started realizing that I was masking about the same time as I was starting transition and I still have a hard time telling the difference between masking and (early on) being in the closet or later, acting cis. It’s just a double whammy of concealing everything about your thoughts and experiences while trying to decide what the other person wants and how to give it to them. But yeah, similar to the point of indistinguishable

Okay you have $100, but you have to spend it on something stupid instead of practical, what are you getting for yourself?

This is not the question to be noble on, I will poke you with a fork (just a little, but it will tickle). You've been warned!

phoenixashes76,

@RickiTarr A nice record player and some vinyl albums. But used, because the search in junk shops is the fun part
