"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."
We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.

@NatureMC @rwba As has been documented by over 50 federated members she did not say it, also over 50 federated members have documented the quotes unfairness and inaccuracy about animals. I origally posted it because I liked the center of the story, kindness to one another is key to civilization.
Many federated members have acknowledged that she did not say it, that it is unfair to animals and that it is a great story and the center of the story is key.

Conservationist, marine biologist, and science writer Rachel Carson was born OTD in 1907.

Carson challenged the widespread use of pesticides in her book “Silent Spring,” and testified before Congress on environmental policy and human health.

@NatureMC No I did not correct it I believe others can read the comments and think for themselves, sorry to outrage you. I posted it orginally because I liked the essence of the message, to be civilized is to care for one another. Some thoughtful people got that message, for that I am grateful.

And once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.

    “DIZZY”
    by Emily Ding
“Dizzy” is the feeling you get when traveling for a long time. Like a cartoon character who’s dazed and sees stars or birds flying around their head.
    —Emily Ding
Drawing inspiration from flora, fauna, and human temperament Emily Ding says her painterly work tells stories of emotions and experiences. Based in Austin and Houston Ding was in San Francisco in early 2019 and felt “dizzy” when she had to tell her family she would not be with them for Lunar New Year. Instead she painted this sublime work on 8th St near Broadway in nearby Oakland, for community art organizer Dragon School 99. While painted from afar Ding says the piece is filled with symbolism of going home. The swallow tattoo, historically used by sailors as a symbol of travel experience, was also believed to take the sailor’s soul to heaven if they were lost at sea. And the colorful circle of swallows are flying counterclockwise back to the start—back home.
