Me (GenX) just asked by a Boomer "Why do you hate the suburbs so much?"

"The suburbs in the late 70s and 80s did things to the adolescent mind. Things you can't come back from. It was the grid formatted and freshly-mowed-lawn scented actualized heat death of culture neatly stored in parent's locked liquor cabinets. It's airless existence mocking all karmic civilizational laws — superpositionally located as both the zenith and nadir of the 20th century American imperial project."

This week's from @Kitty has a theme of from @Nicolaa. The meaning? Songs about how you feel...right now. At this moment. As you are posting.

If I'm being honest this morning? A little anxious. I am an anxiety prone dude and this week is shaping up to be very busy / challenging.

So, how about Bowling For Soup's "Hello Anxiety." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PSl19nf0-Y

Good to see a Hollywood icon - the late, great Lauren Bacall - who didn't turn botoxymoron. She said, "I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that."

A friend I'd never regarded as a fount of wisdom took me by surprise one day when he said that as he aged he saw the world filling up with beautiful women...

When came to Mastodon and the Fediverse, I was clued to boost anything I liked, as there are no algorithms here. It was a way of spreading the word about tooters that you liked, found informative , or were inspired by so others could check them out.
Recently I have noticed more favoriting than boosting.
Please consider boosting the toots you favorite, you others can share your enjoyment.

My uncle says the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalizing it; the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn't want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wrong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches. And the gardens, too. Not many gardens any more to sit around in. And look at the furniture. No rocking chairs any more. They're too comfortable. Get people up and running around.

So many reasons for forbidding deep sea mining, but I think one of the biggest is also least discussed: accountability. Yes, some mines on land are bad, but we can look, check, demand explanations. In the deep sea, it’s incredibly hard to track actions/impacts. If miners behave badly when seen, how badly will they behave when invisible? #ocean https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/27/james-cameron-supports-deep-sea-mining-activists-say-its-a-disaster-whos-right?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

    @NatureMC No I did not correct it I believe others can read the comments and think for themselves, sorry to outrage you. I posted it orginally because I liked the essence of the message, to be civilized is to care for one another. Some thoughtful people got that message, for that I am grateful.
    Someone who postedXY's quote.

    pinskal, to random
    @pinskal@sfba.social avatar

    "Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.
    But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.
    A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said."
    We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.

    pinskal,
    @pinskal@sfba.social avatar

    @NatureMC @rwba As has been documented by over 50 federated members she did not say it, also over 50 federated members have documented the quotes unfairness and inaccuracy about animals. I origally posted it because I liked the center of the story, kindness to one another is key to civilization.
    Many federated members have acknowledged that she did not say it, that it is unfair to animals and that it is a great story and the center of the story is key.
