in the this morning: Splitting of Long-Period Comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS), by Man-To Hui and co-authors. The comet has two components splitting at a relative speed of 3.00±0.18 m/s. Pre-split nucleus might have consisted of two lobes resembling the ones of 67P.

With all this fuss about the supernova in Messier 101, one can ask where is it located in a 3D map of the Universe? Here it is ⤵️

This is Fig.3 of https://doi.org/10.1088/0004-6256/146/3/69 where positions are expressed in units of recession velocities (just divide by 75 km/s/Mpc to go to Mpc)

CHIME Telescope doubles the number of repeating FRBs (Fast Radio Bursts - of unknown origin), providing targets for other telescopes, including those that can measure their positions very accurately, and let us know which galaxies they come from.

Q: What Does the Milky Way Look Like?
A: a multiple-arm morphology with two-arm symmetry (Perseus and Norma Arms) in the innards, extending to the outer regions where are several long, irregular arms: Centaurus, Sagittarius, Carina, Outer, and Local Arms.

In the arXiv, cool update on (50000) Quaoar the Transneptunian: this dwarf planet, half the size of Pluto, harbors not only a moon, Weywot, but also two rare rings, located outside the Roche limit - where rings usually accrete into satellites.

The Messier 106 Galaxy

This galaxy harbors a peculiar system in its nuclear region: a water vapor megamaser, the equivalent of a laser operating in microwave instead of visible light and on a galactic scale!

This maser plays an important role in the calibration of the cosmic distance ladder. Six such galactic maser systems are exploited in our recently published Cosmicflows-4 catalog of galaxy distances: https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11238
