I finally got my Langholzschlepper built and took it out for an inaugural test mission today. Constructed mostly from scrap/street lumber and two rehabilitated dog-trailer wheels. This load of lumber is just 2m but I can extend the tow-bar to haul wood up to 4m long. Works pretty well!

The trailer, not yet loaded or attached. The frame and deck are made of leftover cheap framing lumber. The deck is from a discarded laminated-pine shelf.
The fully loaded and hitched trailer seen from behind. There is room to get longer.
All together now: bike with a home-made "baker's rack" on the front and wood trailer behind.

@adz So Lukas got sick and it's too short notice to plan a new program for tuesday so I had to cancel this time.

But I just got a message that there are a bunch of GNOME folks who wanted to have a discussion instead. Can we still use the space?

praxeology,
@praxeology@post.lurk.org avatar

@liaizon @adz I was just feeling a bit too overwhelmed to plan something new on short notice but some GNOME folks also asked if they could start a discussion instead so I think we will in fact do just that.

@liaizon @adz @dantescanline Putting @tbernard in the loop here. I assume it's ok to keep the meeting public? Do you want to give us a one-liner to announce the meeting?

Unfortunately the Berlin meet-up on 25.04. is going to be moved to another date.
No meeting on Tuesday but we will make it up some time soon (prolly mid-May).

An abundance of Sauerkraut leads to experimentation. Not entirely surprised to find it goes well with cheese and peanut butter. But fun to discover how well it works in a stir-fry with carrots, leek and ginger.

does anyone have a recommended tool/service for searching for toots which contain certain text

  • in your own toots
  • in your favorited toots
  • in toots you have reboosted
praxeology,
@praxeology@post.lurk.org avatar

@notplants Not sure which version your instance has but newer versions (after 4.2) of masto (and forks?) have some kind of search switches to search in your own toots by adding "from:me" to your query. There are some more search filters documented here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

However, if you want something offline or using an archive, there's this: https://github.com/kensanata/mastodon-archive

And there are some links in the ReadMe to some similar alternatives.

@mlundblad Hey @liaizon weren't you asking about something like this recently?

mhoye, to random
@mhoye@mastodon.social avatar

Lazyweb, a question: let's say that you could teach a "cultural anthropology" type of course about computing to first year students, to prepare them for the codebases, communities, patterns and software philosophies of the programming world. You've got about ten weeks to run it. What would you teach in that course and why?

(RTs appreciated for reach.)

praxeology,
@praxeology@post.lurk.org avatar

@mhoye Some readings that might be helpful:

  • Ursula Franklin - The Real World of Technology
  • Olia Lialina (@GIFmodel) - Turing Complete User
  • Femke Snelting (@Femke) - Awkward Gestures
  • Maybe Friedrich Kittler - "Protected Mode" or "There is no Software"
  • The Permacomputing WiKi - https://permacomputing.net/

And there was this paper I read from some management consultants written about 15 years ago that was called something like "Why the majority of software projects fail." A really good empirical argument that most of the failures of development occur because the business people can't communicate what they want. Sadly, I can't find it right now.

I kind of feel that not enough is made of how the far-right has weaponised the internet and is totally undermining democracy. Like everyone knows it but is there much being done to oppose it? At this point I think there's every possibility that reform uk will win loads of seats in the next election here, and win the election after that, just by manipulating public opinion on otherwise uncontroversial issues like active travel and human rights.

praxeology,
@praxeology@post.lurk.org avatar

@yaxu Indeed, and I feel that so much of it is difficult to unravel because it's not actually about politics or issues instead it's about aesthetics as applied in a symbolic Winners vs. Losers battle. It does not matter what actually happens, and most definitely longer term consequences are totally irrelevant. What's important is a professional-wrestling-like performative public insult battle with people who are other. Trash talk and machismo. Everyone cheers and forgets what happened last week.

It feels like a very sad game of psychological avoidance - folks avoid the things that really scare them and make them sad as well as the real conditions that make their lives difficult – instead they project onto someone being cruel, convinced they are on the side of the winners on the other side of a screen.

this morning i experienced a device that's kind of a technological marvel, it doesn't use any power (except illumination by external light source) yet just by looking at it for a few minutes it projected intense and vivid imagery into my mind and let me hear scripted voices accompanying the scenery. (i was reading a book)

I think many of us (and I am sometimes extremely guilty of this) spend an awful lot of time thinking and talking about people we do not admire, who do a lot of harmful things. It seems healthy to try to limit that and focus more on friends, lovers, family, neighbors and those who make us feel more reciprocal feelings of care.

I think this applies on a personal level and on a more political institutional level. I'd like to rant less about the crappy big institutions and CEOs and rave more about the lovable (and imperfect) small ones in 2024.

One of the problems of digital systems is that they pretend to represent infinite resources. So we end up collecting gigabytes of media, scrolling endlessly and opening hundreds of tabs. It's very hard to know when to stop so you eventually feel overwhelmed, confused, tired and freaked out.

And since these systems are based on individualized, interactive choices we tend to blame ourselves for bad choices or poor self-discipline. But we are dealing with stuff that is cognitively hostile. It's designed, in many cases, intentionally, to constantly cut off our ability to reflect and process our thoughts and emotions or to see them in a broader social context.

But we are human and don't have infinite capacities. You can't expect yourself to become a zen monk just to get a few things done with the computer!

As I see it, the way forward is to try to put ourselves in different situations where we don't need super-human powers of self control and concentration. An interface (digital or not) should be limited and mirror our own abilities to think. and related approaches are helpful because they have more human scale limitations built-in and frame these constraints not as a problem, but a virtue.

If I had to pick my absolute favorite cloud application, I would have to go with Cloudberry Jam. Such a rare taste.

Looking at the amber colored jammy goodness. The image can not really explain the taste.

I moved outside the city center earlier this year. I'm now very happy and well integrated in my new Kiez. But I was cleaning up and found these photos of a few lurkers outside my old building saying goodbye.

A grey heron walking on a sidewalk with soviet era apartments in the background. Probably stalking rats or lost bits of Döner.

Our sustainable, hand-cranked drill press is very popular with both the junior and senior wood-workers here. The flywheel applies enough pressure to do medium-bore forstner bits and smaller-bore stuff in metal. Much quieter and more fun than the electric alternatives.

Not bad for a tool that's about 100 years old.

The drill press has a large metal flywheel on the top, a clutch knob on the left and a wooden crank handle on the right. The turning axle extends downward as it's cranked.
A reasonably tidy looking hole (~30mm) in a piece of sycamore (London Plane) wood.
A picture from the right side. You can see there are two crank axles for two speeds.

My local Cargo Bike Collective started a few months ago and we have finally gotten our shop and stuff together enough to finish a bike. We scrounged some old junked bikes from the neighborhood along with an old wheelbarrow basin for cargo. It still needs some tuning but it's lookin' good and rides surprisingly well.

Close up showing how we added two long pipes from the steering colum to the rear wheel to support the barrow at the right angle.
A view from the back showing the rusty old barrow (that will be painted this week) holding two apples and a "Rad Kaputt" bike repair pamphlet.
A wider view. You can see that the frame is from an abandoned 26" women's bike.

It's never "just a tool".

And any time somebody uses that phrase, they might be trying to avoid reflection or debate about side-effects and consequences.
