This is a thread, it was originally on twitter posted on tumblr and i found it in my export. I think that this is a very important thing for people to hear, especially in regards to alt text on fedi. Please be mindful of the people around you, and try to make things accessible. PSA: If you have to sit there removing traits that your friends deem "unacceptable", such as trying to avoid your sexuality or acting like "an LGBTQ+" individual... protip: those people aren't your friends and doing that to yourself over long periods of time is not worth it. I sat there for YEARS repressing myself to be included in tech spaces who would've otherwise hated me for being publicly trans and queer. I regret trying to suck up and be "one of them" or "a good one". No fuck you, I am not hampering my personality to sit there and appease someone who very much wants my kind eradicated. Part of my recent techposting has been the fact I found a space where I can both be a kinky weird freak who's trans and gay while still being respected and able to talk to people about technology. A lot of the time I spent in those communities was negative to my mental health. Watching my acquaintances (if they can even be called that) spouting transphobic & homophobic rhetoric for years unend while not being able to say anything, and having to hide that part of me did a lot of harm on my mental health.

Please be patient with the tumblr refugees as they get adjusted to the fedi-netiquette. I may just be speaking for myself, but getting feedback on things that break instance rules, or annoy instances, etc is something that I love to hear. I don't want to run around like some basement dwelling troll, and I don't want to have people parroting bad mannerisms. When I joined tumblr there were a lot of weird unwritten social rules for how to do things like tagging posts, and such. It is going to be a second to unlearn behaviors from that webbed site.

Hey, I understand this is a lot to ask of y’all but I want this to remain a space we can stay long term. We're currently running into issues with our hardware limitations and unfortunately we are going to be having to upgrade our hardware and that costs money. There’s been several discussions sporadically about how to approach doing so, and today we have finally worked out a feasible plan on what we want to do in order to address this need. We took the approach of trying to start off with something easily scalable with the downside of being a bit an expensive upfront cost. While we could go and run this on cheaper, older hardware it will cost us significantly more in the long term due to power consumption in the data center. After doing hours of discussion with multiple people we have decided that the best way to host this instance without falling for traps like vendor lock in (looking at you aws) is to own our server hardware and rent out a space in a data center to give it power and network connectivity. We looked at various approaches and designs architecturally from things like utilizing vpses and dedis, and after a long discussion we have come to this conclusion. This is a lot to ask, but I genuinely think that it is going to be so much more worth it than cheaping out short term and causing long term financial issues. We’ve asked multiple people and compared multiple vendors to make this as cost effective as possible.
