(or at least the ) can succeed . But debates here are mostly about features still needed (QT, onboarding etc.).

Here's some content, I'm still missing. All of this is already here to a degree, but not as much as on Twitter.

  1. Experts explaining interesting stuff ("A Thread")
  2. Links to interesting articles, that I wouldn't have found otherwise
  3. Long running topics like
  4. Funny commentary

What did I miss?

raineer,

@mho @tomkalei I would chime in that all that content is here, but you need to know who to follow. And there is no Mastodon(TM)-sponsored lists of people to follow, so we all kinda solve this problem on our own. Once again, I think it comes back to onboarding and the need to have a "voice" which suggests content.

I don't know how to solve the issue in a Twitter-ish way without adding a fourth type of feed which is more like "here are things which you might find interesting". At an instance level, we have this in the Trends section, and it does work if you keep up with the moderation. But it doesn't feel as organic as it did on twitter.

I think this highlights the difference in Twitter (the network will prioritize showing you what it wants) vs Mastodon (the network will prioritize showing you things you explicitly asked to see).

Apparently the all-knowing Bluesky knows what's best for everybody and everything, and I have no right to criticize because I'm not making anything as cool and amazing as AT protocol.

These Bluesky Kool-Aid drinkers are too much.

raineer,

@atomicpoet that isn’t at all similar to the “musk knows everything” crew. Amazing.

atomicpoet, to internet

people need to know about .

Mastodon people too, but mostly Bluesky.

raineer,

@atomicpoet I've seen you post about it a ton.
The landing page at calckey.social has a bunch of mastodon instances scrolling at the bottom. I'm not sure what it is communicating. Yes, the scrolling posts look different than Mastodon. I get that.

The github readme does have a listing of notable differences - but what are the "differences" from? Misskey? I don't know what that is either. Is this a competitor to vanilla mastodon, or a competitor to micro.blog? The use case isn't immediately clear.

BTW, if you use phanpy.social, you already get what’s effectively quote-tweeting, if you paste in the URL of the post you want to quote.

I'm sure there are other clients that are doing this now?

raineer,

@timbray Ice Cubes has had quote toots for some time. I like it

Fiery Feeds, an excellent RSS reader for Apple platforms, added an in-app split view mode to its iOS app that lets you browse headlines and read articles at the same time.

I wish more iPhone apps offered this mode: https://www.macstories.net/ios/fiery-feeds-for-ios-added-an-in-app-split-view-mode-that-i-wish-more-iphone-apps-offered/

raineer,

@viticci I love this ping-pong of apps, the competition is wonderful. I used Fiery Feeds for years (remember Fever? It supported Fever well!!), and then drifted over to Reeder and NNW for some time, hadn’t though about Fiery in forever - and now this?!? Time to try again!

My timeline begs to differ!

raineer,

@twipped yeah if you aren’t seeing shitposting you are following the wrong people !!

There is a lot of speculation about why Tucker got kicked off Fox News

But the Murdochs were cool w/Tucker REPEATEDLY EMBRACING A WHITE NATIONALIST CONSPIRACY THEORY THAT INSPIRED MASS MURDERERS

So it's pretty much impossible to logically deduce what pushed them over the edge

raineer,

@juddlegum my theory is someone said “cucker tarlson” out loud in a board meeting and they decided well shit we can’t have that

i keep being asked questions along the lines of "now that crypto's dead, what are you going to focus on next?"

reminds me of when people stop taking antibiotics as soon as they start to feel better

raineer,

@molly0xfff I love the fact it’s 2023 and the world hasn’t figured out that stories like this run when a single rich dude needs a price to go up. It’s like we aren’t even trying.

Been playing around with Bluesky a bit & it’s pretty interesting. They have an easier consumer experience (signup/discovery/UI works like Twitter) and it all feels very snappy. I like how they use domain names (or subdomains) instead of what look like funky email addresses. By far the biggest problem Jay & co face is that Jack Dorsey has effectively poisoned the well on everything from people assuming it’s a crypto platform (it’s not) to assuming (understandably) that be bad at trust & safety.

raineer,

@anildash @thomasfuchs I check out of the argument at “mastodon was designed to make social interactions harder”. This is wholly inaccurate and just shared in bad faith. I’m getting tired of people spending so much effort on this platform just to shit on it and advertise others.

Mastodon is designed to allow me to choose who I interact with. Not getting replies from a server I don’t federate with is a feature, not a bug.

The “quote toot” thing is just a tired argument. Yes - the first decade of the place, the authors didn’t want it, and they had their reasons (and I defend them, even though I want quote-toots). BUT, welcome to the open web, where there are now clients with quote-toots, so this is now an outdated view. And, even now, Eugene has said that he’s changing his mind on it.
