I have my own views but I'll reserve them so as not to put a thumb on the scale.

Is either parmesan or pecorino an ingredient in homemade tomato sauce? Note I am not asking if it is added when plating, this is purely a question as to whether either are an ingredient in the sauce itself.

randulo,
@randulo@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew You could, but it's gross. 🤣

randulo,
@randulo@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew Wow, you do not want to get me started! But the best answer is, if the tomato sauce or bits are too acid, I might add fruit or carrot (then blend). For example, to make ketchup at home, I would use a date or two. But for an Italian-ish sauce, a little Balsamic if there's no decent red wine.

Answer; "It depends". But either of those cheeses should go on the plate IMO.

    @cloudguy Totally, but a different kind, where some people became billionaires in the first wave and a lot of people made thousands in the second wave, then hundreds in the third. We're moving toward another third wave, but it's a total bad gamble.

    When to get into it? When you have enough to light cigars with $100 bills.

    Stop. Renaming. Stuff.

    This will net you exactly zero additional subscriptions. No one is reticent to sign up for "HBO Max" but chomping at the bit to go all-in with "Max" -- no one cares.

    And I know, "oh its because they’ll be including Discovery+” content. You know what is on HBO Max? Sesame Street.

    No one is expecting consistency between offerings and brand here. Just leave the names alone.

    Thank you.

    @andrew HBO and Google are horrible at this.

    It's wild that Investopedia, of all sites, just did a company profile on gGmbh with an article entitled, "How Mastodon Makes Money".

    Now before anyone who didn't read the article gets into a panic with "Mastodon sold out" -- they didn't -- Investopedia are sure to mention that Mastodon is a non-profit and it raises money through donations.

    As for why Investopedia wrote this article, like it or not, the question of "How will it monetize" will always be front and center when talking about social media. And to be honest, that's a more than fair question to ask.

    But I'll go further. It's not just about how a social media company imagines itself to make money. It's how they will make money when they must.

    I'm just going to admit this even though it makes me sound like an insensitive asshole, because look, we all make mistakes and the point is to grow, right?

    when I first came to Mastodon and people were reminding me to add alt text to my images, I was a little irked

    then I read several posts about how much this means to people who rely on reading apps to understand the web

    now I'm fully converted. I enjoy writing alt text.

    and I think it's crazy this isn't standard across all social mediums.

    randulo,
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    @mimsical Awareness of it is growing on most platforms AFAICT.

    randulo, to random
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    The biggest perceivable feature of the fediverse (via Mastodon, at least) is the conviviality, the conversation, engagement as the for profit sites like to call it.
    You can connect to and talk to people, even if your "reach" is not wide. I know, because that has been my experience forever. I'm less familiar with other arms, such as Diaspora, even though I have been there since early beta.

    randulo, to random
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    Mastodon has "brand recognition". The rest of the fediverse is a mystery to those who don't take the time to learn what it is.
    Would you like to live in Paris? Or would Saint-Germain-en Laye be a captivating destination for you? To know, you'd have to look it up and do some research. The two are connected by light rail. Get it? Connection, federation, same idea. I have no idea how the train works, I just know I can go between the two places. Living in Paris, I may never have heard of S-G-e-L.

    So time to answer the burning question: why did I move from mastodon.social to calckey.social?

    First, let's get the obvious out of the way.

    I bought the calckey.social domain back in December. You see, I run a local Calckey server called vancity.social, and I noticed people were registering there just to try . In the spirit of keeping vancity.social a local server, I felt that I needed a space to kick non-Vancouver residents so they can fool around with the software.

    So the idea for calckey.social was born.

    A month later, @kainoa asked if he could make it an "official" server for Calckey. It was originally supposed to be the junior server to calckey.cloud. But after awhile, he felt that there should be a place for casual folks to hang-out.

    Well, once we got our ducks in a row, calckey.social shot off like fireworks.

    We discovered there was lots of demand, and it was all so unpredictable. So now calckey.social is the flagship server, and it's grown by 1,200 accounts over the past 2 weeks.

    Naturally, people asked why I'm on mastodon.social and not over here.

    At first, it was because I didn't want to be the one to dominate the server. People who know me, realize how loud I can be.

    But now that we're coming close to 1,500 accounts on calckey.social, that's no longer a big deal.

    However, I still imagine that this account migration may change the very young culture here. Now that the migration is complete, I am the largest account on Calckey by follower count.

    Things are about to get more noisy here.

    But what a time to build a new community!

    randulo,
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet @kainoa Interesting history, thanks. I like calckey but agree with many that the interface is crowded. My favorite feature is post length.

    This take is annoying.

    But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

    How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

    No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

    That story isn't being told.

    Kinda happy about BlueSky if it draws away all the people trying to turn Mastodon into Twitter.
    They'll be back when Dorsey screws them over again, but we don't have to wait up for their return.

    randulo,
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    @CrazyMyra In my observation, a relatively small percentage of ex-Twitter people stay on Mastodon. Most find it "confusing". I've even heard it called "a nightmare". THis makes no sense to me, but as someone else told me, "People don't like to change". They can find a close Twitter replacement on Spoutible or Post, both of which are full of US politics. Post has some creatives, but they are slowly getting disappointed. Both of these claim strong moderation.

    randulo,
    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    @CrazyMyra Many on Post describe themselves as "Rabid DEM", "Blue AF" and other USA political "statements" (which I find pathetic. Is that who you are?) and many are "News junkie".
    Me, I see the news from media and don't need the overshared links. Mastodon has a good mix, some important stories I may have missed or value-added analysis, not just rants with ugly photos.

    Since some people have asked me, here's a quick thread on initial experience comparison between Bluesky and the fediverse. It's important to note that this comparison is somewhat absurd by default because Bluesky is still tiny & unproven, but there's interest so I'm happy to share what I've observed. Also, I don't get into protocol differences because honestly who cares. So:

    @randulo@mastodon.social avatar

    I know very little about Mastodon of how federation works, but what I do know is that if you want to discuss or chat, it's the most effective IMO. Of all networks I'm on, none of them are as easy for engagement or topic diversity, including Twitter which has never been friendly to anyone but celebs. Twitter, Post and Spoutible are NEWS sites.

    💭 Boosts are better than likes. Likes are not tallied and are only seen by the original poster. They're a pat on the back, not a cred builder. Boosts are seen by all.

    @mike I use likes to show I saw someone's reply as well, but the main thng to understand is what was said above. Only boosts actually have an effect on the post you boost. Like says "seen" or "agreed" (or other similar)
