I wish everyone would implement a Google Takeouts feature that allowed you to export all your data and take it with you if you wanted to.

By everyone I specifically mean Apple.

It should be criminal to hold users hostage by not allowing them to choose other brands because all their info is siloed in the ecosystem.

In the coming decade we must collectively address the question: how important is it for us to own our data? Otherwise companies will keep trampling over us.

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@derickr wow. Haven’t had to read into GDPR since most of my work/projects are here in the US but this makes so much sense as a consumer. I believe my state (VA) is making inroads in this fields modelling after data privacy laws in California.

And it’s in an easy to read format too! Kudos to the EU we have lots to be thankful for

@grmpyprogrammer “they drove through the totality” — an absolutely zoomer thing to do.

realsshrestha,

@syntaxseed I guess SteamDeck didn't make any impact on the numbers then? OR that's why "Arch Linux" shot up to #1 on the linux list 😀

@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

I gotta get this off my chest but has the worst fucking representatives.

Want I mean is the people introducing Drupal to the people PAYING for the development are usually PMs without a freaking clue of how things work.

It just makes everyone hate the system. Including developers.

You know who doesn’t have this problem? Microsoft Sitecore or Adobe CQ5 because these companies actually spend resources for their marketing materials.

Damn it!

My son is signing up for a Civitai account, and he’s sitting here, carefully reading through the terms of service. Gen Z might be all right.

realsshrestha,

@ramsey why not have a competitor AI summarize the TOS?

bagder, to random
@bagder@mastodon.social avatar

People often ask me if I ever have detected an attempt to plant a backdoor in . But I have never. I use to say that exploiting a mistake, a security vulnerability, is a MUCH more likely attack scenario because trying to merge a backdoor is super difficult.

But that only goes for outsiders. An insider, a trusted maintainer since years back, of course has a much better opportunity to sneak in malicious code etc. Still not easy though.

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@bagder if I was maintaining an app for free, yes in an instant.

If I was getting paid to maintain an app, yes in an instant.

Basically. Nothing is more important than family

realsshrestha,

@bagder it’s a scary thought. It opens the door to loads of trust issues. 😂

A friend was telling me about guidelines for developing and deploying new services in their company, and one of the guidelines is “new services must not use .”

I’m not making this up, and this isn’t hyperbole. They actually have this listed on their company documentation.

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @inthehands very much so. JavaScript (React et al) leading pay. It’s directly a result of more demand for those languages.

struggling to find a mac app that is the quality of HeidiSQL (https://www.heidisql.com) at an open source price point.

say that as a point of principle not budget. boss will annoyingly buy anything i want.

sequelpro isnt maintained, sequel ace is modern fork and so far the best found. dbeaver is atrocious and mysql workbench is somehow still a big joke.

no interest in paying a yearly sub for jetbrains datagrope.

heidi's strong point is it doesn't "just do things" it queues and you commit.

My kids discovered the Air Bender adventure world DLC for ... and were over the moon excited about it. Spent $15 of their eShop money from Christmas to buy it.

And it's super, super glitchy. 😓
(Hell Minecraft in general on is bug ridden.)

Really a bummer. Don't think we'll buy any more Minecraft add-ons. 👎

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey ever since I got the Max everything else is just on the sidelines.

I use it for meetings, music, playing games on the switch lite, mowing grass, washing dishes, or just blocking out the world while using laptop in the mall.

It’s the one thing I always have with me (apart from my phone).

If they only added usbc to it 🙈

Journalists flocking to Threads is no surprise — many got used to Twitter supplying them with everything they needed in a low-effort environment. And all the people who influence society at large will be on there or Twitter instead of the hostile-to-those-making-a-living-online Mastodon

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer haven’t been on here in a while but “hostile-to-those-making-a-living-online” doesn’t sound a bit like Mastodon! 😱

In 1997, when we still had 56k modems, if your website took 10 seconds to load, you lost most of your users. Today, Outlook spins for 20 seconds on a 300 Mbps connection, despite being in cache, and everyone is somehow fine with this regression.

This is without counting the lengthy SSO loop that we need to repeat every morning, because "remember me" is also no longer a feature in 2023, it seems.

realsshrestha,
@realsshrestha@phpc.social avatar

@afilina the things that process got faster and beefier while the things that transport data stayed the same.

Which is why I find it wild that a simple brochure-ware site is hundreds of MB in size. Yes it renders fast but clientside (because of better computing) but you still have to push them through the pipes!

We need the second coming of Harry Seldon to minimize the Dark Ages of the internet.

Evergreen grumpy advice — learn the fundamental patterns behind the tools you have to use and cash them checks. No shame in the “work to fund your lifestyle” game. Passion is overrated, competency is underrated.

A non-programming friend asked me why I don’t use AI “assistants” or ChatGPT to help me solve coding problems. 1) I don’t trust that the examples or answers it provides work 2) I have issues with slurping up other people’s work and using it without permission.

A large swathe of our industry is cheering the effort to have programmers reduced to cleaning up the bullshit that is auto-generated by other programs in addition to cleaning up the bullshit generated by humans.
