NEW RUSSIAN PHONE

A Russian company released an iPhone 15 Pro Pobeda (Victory) for May 9. The price for it is 519,000 rubles (about $5,675).

The average Russian makes about $500 per month!

Aren't IPhones a product of the evil West? Earlier, Russian officials were recommended not to use them. But a "patriotic" phone case fixes everything.

@Free_Press "The average Russian makes about $500 per month! " These are very old numbers, before 2014. Now "average Ruzzian" makes much less.

@parismarx@mastodon.online avatar

The United States wants the world to choose: either they accept the dominance of Silicon Valley or fall into the hands of scary Chinese tech. But that choice makes no sense.

If we want better tech, it must be rejected in favor of another model that breaks up the monopolies and gives countries more power to shape their own technological futures.

@parismarx I read this as "gives countries to build own digital gulag with incompatible hardware, protocols, and software, where only one thing will be common - total censorship".
Lack of hardware, protocol and software compatibility is a way to learn the harsh way how digital state or corporate gulag works.

The TikTok Ban, Joe Biden, and SATAN!

The ban -- which will likely face years of litigation and may be ultimately turned down by U.S. courts (as it should be) on first amendment and other grounds, reminds me of another dark episode of bipartisan madness decades ago.

Back in the 1980s in particular, "satanic cult" scares spread across the country, the media, and politicians of both parties. Innumerable lives were ruined as innocent people were imprisoned for long periods based on much the same nonsense as during the Salem Witch Trials of the 17th century. The lack of actual evidence in both cases didn't stop the panic.

While the TikTok ban shouldn't force innocent people into prison or result in them being burned at the stake, many lives that are dependent on income related to TikTok would be negatively affected, and a popular communications medium for a vast number of Americans would be cut off -- while the lack of actual evidence to support such drastic actions is glaring.

There is also much hypocrisy in play. Even as President Biden signed the ban, his campaign apparently plans to continue using TikTok! Not a good look Joe. Not good at all. That's the kind of thing we expect from Trump. You're better than that. -L

koteisaev,
@koteisaev@mastodon.online avatar

@lauren I doubt that China will not sell the "golden goose" (algorithm) of TikTok.
Essentially, algorithm of "Home" (or other primary/default) tab/feed is what every social media.
I doubt that people really do any serious money at social media per se. Such can happen only due to lack (and than it is not specific to one or another social media) or as a money laundering scheme (which is a crime).

🚨NEWS: Corporations tried to block a rule forcing them to disclose CEO & worker pay.

The rule went into effect - now data show CEOs have been jacking up their pay while slashing workers' pay.

The CEO/worker pay gap grew 34 PERCENT in the last 5 years. https://www.levernews.com/ceos-got-raises-as-they-cut-workers-pay/

@davidsirota This is normal way how any company based on shareholders model evolve/rot over time.
CEO is not a founder, eventually, but some random person who does not give a fark about workers or even company long-term success. first ceo cut workers pay as part of "costs optimization programme" or "improve profitability", and than as reward for that CEO write off a big bonus for doing so.
There is no other thing that can happen in a for-profit organization based on shareholders model.

This is a shitty source but the only one that I found in English:

Suspect Paweł K is accused of helping the Kremlin’s security services to plan the attack that was foiled by Poland with help from Ukraine. Pawel K was detained yesterday and charged with “reporting his readiness to act for foreign intelligence” and could face up to eight years in prison.

A joint investigation, led by Polish and Ukrainian law enforcement, found he “established contacts with the Russian Federation directly involved in the war in Ukraine”. A statement said: “His tasks included the collecting and providing of military intelligence for the Russian Federation with information on the security of the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport”. His intention was “to help Russian special services plan a possible attack” on President Zelensky, it added.

The average monthly salary in Germany is USD 3500.

The average monthly salary in Russia is USD 700.

And Russians still fail to understand why Ukrainians want to join the EU.

Russian state propaganda really does work.

koteisaev,
@koteisaev@mastodon.online avatar

@randahl I doubt that strong desire of Ukrainians and Georgians to join EU can be explained only by salary differences. This strong desire to "run away from f%king ruzzia" is not related to salaries as is. It is a much more deeper thing and comes from decades and even centuries of quite negative experience of being occupied by Ruzzia one way or another.

Many, many years ago, on one of the earliest ARPANET (the Internet's ancestor) mailing lists (probably HUMAN-NETS) I noted what was already becoming obvious -- that interaction restricted to text was likely to exacerbate many comments into misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and flame wars -- for the simple reason that all manner of human contexts -- speech emphasis, tone of voice, facial expressions, mannerisms, body language, and more, simply do not exist in a text-only universe. Sarcasm is almost impossible to express without labeling it explicitly, and using uppercase letters or bracketing asterisks for emphasis provide only the crudest of additional signals.

It is unfortunate that even after all these years, we find ourselves in pretty much exactly the same situation in email and social media, including, sadly, here on .

The more things change, the more they really do stay the same.

koteisaev,
@koteisaev@mastodon.online avatar

@lauren I noticed that some people, including me, have issues with recognizing sarcasm even in "real" reality, during "alive" communication IRL, with all these body language, voice tone, etc, available.
I am happy with all these text-only universes, and I DON"T want Fediverse becoming e. g. VR or video-first universe. it is easier for me to read @pluralistic as text, than e g. understand it if it would be a video or audio or VR "podcast".
