This just crossed my mind, and they better leave Double Fine alone!!!!!!!

richdmay,

@djlink Yeah, I was thinking about that. I can't understand why that isn't always an option in these scenarios. You'd think that someone would have bought Arkane Austin or Tango Gameworks. At least Relic escaped from Sega before the axe fell.

richdmay,

@djlink I had such high hopes for the "new" Microsoft. Post-Lionhead, their custodianship of companies like Rare, Ninja Theory and Double Fine had been exemplary. Post the big Bethesda/Activision takeovers, it feels like a completely different situation. If I was at an MS-owned studio now, I'd be polishing up my resume.

a new Nintendo console will be announced during this fiscal year.

richdmay,

@djlink My biggest fear is it follows the SteamDeck / ROG Ally et. al and grows to be massive. The Switch is just about portable but playing with things like the GBA & PSP makes me miss that kind of compactness.

In 1994, our puzzle game Clockwiser was released for Amiga (OCS and AGA), CD32 console, MS-DOS and Windows 3.1.

This is the 4-channel music our composer Ramon Braumuller made for a 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙤 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 that was included on magazine cover disks.

The tune is 109 kilobytes, including digitized instruments.

Download Clockwiser for free here:

richdmay,

@metin Awesome! I never had the pleasure of playing the full game but I loved the cover disk demo of Clockwiser. I played it repeatedly back in the day.

@djlink Something something shareholders something. 🤷‍♂️

richdmay,

@djlink Every time someone questions why these CEOs get such ridiculous salaries the answer is something along the lines of "It's the only way we can attract and keep someone so good at their job."

Increasingly it seems like they, maybe... aren't?

To Affinity and beyond: what does the Canva buyout means for the future of Serif?

^ My thoughts on the Serif buyout.

richdmay,

@craiggrannell I don't have any skin in this particular fight but increasingly, a product I like being bought by another company gives me the same sinking feeling that seeing "New Improved Recipe" on one of my favourite treats does.

Read this article at the weekend. I adored the original & it was one of the first games I played with the Spud where she was able to create something. To know that it helped launch the careers of today's park designers is just awesome.

richdmay,

@guntha Maybe he's relented? I hope so, because he's a designer that doesn't get anywhere enough plaudits compared to some of his more famous counterparts.

Sometimes the procedural generation delivers these interesting shapes.

I tried to imagine how a city would develop around this gulf, but couldn't resist adding houses on the peninsulas, despite limited access to workplaces.

What would you do instead?

GIF of an isometric city that has developed around a procedurally generated gulf. Steam trains and boats travel around delivering resources to industries.

richdmay,

@elmowilk Seems sensible, but thinking about alternatives, I'm reminded of how there are often things like refineries on coastal areas near ports and such. I remember sitting on a ferry to France one day and watching miles and miles of industrial infrastructure drifting slowly past.

How to convince the world to stop using Chrome? Asking for a friend.

richdmay,

@djlink Chrome's doing a pretty good job of that itself, tbh.

This idea to mess with school holidays keeps coming up. I don’t see the value in moving two weeks off from summer to typically gloomy and colder autumn and winter months. It’d also put overseas summer breaks well beyond more people because prices would skyrocket. https://www.theguardian.com/education/2024/feb/26/school-summer-holidays-half-term-england-calendar-nuffield-foundation-report

richdmay,

@craiggrannell No thanks. Whilst managing childcare over the summer holidays is tough, covering two weeks of half-term would a nightmare when both parents are working. At least the summer is one big block and arrangements for summer clubs or family visits can be made to take the edge off.

Ugh. Every single PS4 or PS5 controller I use for day-to-day dev work now has a battery life measured in nanoseconds. Meanwhile, my 360, Xbox One and Series controllers continue happily with a set of rechargeable AAs in them.

They may make devices fancier but non-replaceable batteries are bad(tm).

richdmay,

@raptor85 That's a valid point. Far too many devices become trash because their charging ports die. I guess it's a common point of failure due to the stresses but still, making those robust or more easily replaceable would go a long way.

richdmay,

@djlink Yep, totally. Back when the 360 was new I thought it was dumb but time has changed my mind. Back in the day I bought those "play and charge" batteries at the time but they've gone the way of all things long ago. My 360 pad itself keeps on trucking though.

Went to the Oxford market yesterday (would have been rude not to - it was next door to the Rebellion office!) and I couldn't resist getting this big box copy of Lotus 3. I've played this game consistently for 30 years & never actually owned a legit copy.

A photo of the back of the box - yellow with tons of tiny black text and some screenshots from the game on the right side. The Gremlin Graphics logo is clearly visible in the middle at the bottom.
Photo of the interior of the box showing the manual and a pair of blue 3.5" discs with white labels.

Read another tedious "everyone will be playing to earn soon" article (which I won't link here - there's enough of that stuff around already). I thought we'd moved past crypto NFT bollocks now that LLMs were the new hotness. Guess not.

I think it's important to remember just how awesome the EU box art for the Dune 2 game was.
