    Is there any way to block, once and for all, the incessant "Sign in with Google" popups in my desktop browers? Even Ublock Origin seems helpless, and I'm forced to block each one individually.

    One of my students has hit a wall trying to sign up for a Wikipedia account -- blocked (for no reason we can figure out) and then going in circles trying to get unblocked...

    Update: After much difficulty, my student got her account signup to work. We're still not entirely clear why she was blocked, or why she was unblocked, but we're happy.

    @KevinMarks @dangillmor Blocked ranges include (some) VPNs. I have to turn my VPN off whenever I want to edit something on wikipedia. But usually there's a detailed message explaining why the IP is not accepted.

    @dangillmor @KevinMarks What are the symptoms of being blocked? Is it the "This IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia." most of us have been guessing at, or something else?

    @dangillmor Did they ever get that figured out? I tried to edit something on Wikipedia several times in the last 24 hours from different locations and connections, and I keep running into yet another IP block. But somehow switching to a different browser and editing as anonymous finally worked. Go figure.

    Until the fediverse (Mastodon in particular) comes up with a workable "Share to Mastodon" (or the like) button like the ubiquitous Twitter, Facebook, etc. buttons, this place will be lacking a vital capability.

    Update: The comments below indicate that there's a lot of progress in this area already.

    @dangillmor A timeline widget that one could embed in a webpage would also be a big help for e.g. orgs that want to post updates in one place and have them show up elsewhere. It would be very useful for a club I'm a member of where only one guy has the keys to the website and he doesn't want to have to update the homepage every time someone organizes a meet-up.

    If there are such widgets, they're not being advertised very well.
