Looking to do an update on a #Perl script on the office webserver, I looked up the perldoc for a module and ran into, "PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS MODULE IN NEW CODE". 🤔

@mjgardner It's a script using XML::Simple originally written in, I think, 2014. I think it was deprecated even then.

I guess this is how does these days.

First they require in-person , then they relocate business units from one location to another, and force those who can’t uproot their lives to leave.

The Apple location in isn’t going away. But they intentionally forced 121 people to choose between moving to , or lose their jobs. Make no mistake, this is a layoff.

Never mind the fact that is hostile to anyone with a uterus, or is not cishet—why the hell anyone would move to that state? If anything, Apple should be shutting down their Austin office, and paying for people to relocate to a state that better ensures their safety.

@clive @StrangeNoises @dancinyogi My senior year of high school, I had a job at the school district's computer office and I did one of my papers for Sr. English on the PDP with daisy-wheel output. The teacher made a comment about docking my score for cheating or something because all the other kids had to use a typewriter or do it long hand. I think she was kidding, but I was never sure.

    When the “Neri Oxman admits to plagiarism story” broke, I reached out to a board member I knew at BI, and to its controlling shareholders, the co-ceos of KKR, and to Mathias Döpfner, the Chairman and CEO of Axel Springer. I assumed that with a call or two, I would be able to convince BI or AS to suspend the stories so we could address the materially misleading and false statements that were damaging to Neri while the stories were in suspension. This seemed like an easy request to me. If we weren’t able to rebut the allegations, then BI was free to republish the stories. They would be even bigger stories in that case, but after 110 hours or so of trying, I haven’t been able to achieve this objective.

    Okay techies: Every time I post a link to my website on Mastodon, everyone (including me) is shut out of my website for about 5 mintutes with an "error 500" message.

    This doesn't happen when I post anywhere else, and I get 10 time the traffic from other sources.

    People have offered me and my tech support staff (my husband) solutions. None of them worked.

    @Teri_Kanefield @dinandmentink Teri, It can easily be hundreds when you don't even have an especially well-followed Mastodon account. I can post a link to my office website here on Mastodon and then watch the raw server log scroll by and see 200 requests for the linked page come from Mastodon instances in just a couple minutes. I consider this a flaw in how Mastodon works, but it does sound like your WordPress could possibly be better tuned.

    In a few months, when my Apple TV+ annual subscription expires, I'll subscribe to zero streaming services.

    Their incessant price hikes turned me into a once-in-a-while user, subscribing for a month only to catch up on specific stuff.

    Also, Amazon's me-too greed -- making ad-free Prime Video a higher-cost option -- persuades me to drop Prime itself after ~15 years.

    I'm estimating annual savings of at least $600, albeit with some added annoyance in keeping track of what's on where, and when.

    @dangillmor Not available from some. NYPL used to provide it but cut it some years ago. When they did carry it, there may have been a limit of how many movies you could watch per month (10?).

    Cookie, mid way through her 5 mile, mostly uphill walk today. Showing some friends who moved here some sights.

    She loves to brisk walk, run up hill, and generally walk about really fast like she’s on a mission to see and do everything. Being a grandma, she fell asleep the minute she got home and she’s still snoring

    I’m old enough to remember when smoking (and smoke) was everywhere, and the idea that smokers might ever be asked or made to stop was seen as absurd. Many kids (including me) got horrible bronchitis every single year and had other sorts of breathing problems all the time. Many parents (and other adults) died early.

    @histoftech It was only about 20 years ago that smoking was banned in NYC bars. Smokers hated it until they discovered the camaraderie of hanging around outside and bitching about The Man with others who would listen. Non-smokers were like, I can breathe! Also, I won't have to throw all my clothes in the wash when I get home!
