https://kmaasrud.com/blog/opml-is-underrated.html

I knew OPML only as a format where I export and migrate my podcast subscriptions; but it could be a great way to make a webpage of recommended blogs and podcasts that people can immediately subscribe to. The opml can even be styled. What if people share annotated OPML collections, rather than web rings? Will play around with this in the near future.

@liaizon I don't know? I found it on the orange site. What is your OPML dream?

In 2015 I organized a tour of data centres, internet and energy infrastructures to explore the question why data centers are built where they are built (https://test.roelof.info/projects/infrastructours/).

After the tour there was a lunch where people could make their own Double-Irish Dutch Sandwiches.

The recipe helps complete the picture of what makes "a good environment" for a multinational company and their data centers.

I rediscovered it again the other day and added it to my blog: https://test.roelof.info/log/double-irish-dutch-sandwich/

This is what an open social ecosystem looks like, lots of content types where the user can use many apps with the same data and identity. The fediverse could do this but it’s held back by its fundamental design as a network of walled off fiefdoms.

Smartphone manufacturers have recently begun announcing they will support their newer models of phones with at least five years of software updates. They like you to believe they are taking responsibility by themselves at the benefit of us the consumer.

The reality is that the new EU guidelines are forcing them to do this if they want to stay on the European market:

I just wanted to help a friend degooglify their shared rehearsal room calendar, but it ended up with me getting nerd-sniped into building a smol, nice calendar for small collectives/friend circles. (/▽\) It's a single php file you can drop in any webhost, then it walks you through first time setup and then it's up and running. It persists all data to an adjacent php file, so you can simply backup/transfer the calendar by moving the files between computers. We'll do a test-run with the shared rehearsal room, then I'll release it (copyleft). It's also mobile-friendly, has dark/light mode, only 5 lines of (optional) javascript :D, and I'm doing my best to get accessibility right from the get-go. I'm kinda excited, and highly amused what an easy nerd-sniping target I am. Yay! :D

A simple settings page for a calendar, allowing editing of title, weeks shown, start of week, editing users, adding users. Each user needs a key, name and permissions setting.

Today I'm joining the Institute for Degrowth Studies for an introductory event on of digital devices. I'll be talking about the energy use of the internet, old devices and e-waste. I'll share how we investigated this topic through making a website that was designed to support 10 years or older devices, by drastically reducing the energy use of that website. As part of the event, there will be a workshop with an ad hoc museum of obsolete smartphones and tables. You can use them to put that and other websites and apps to the test. You can also bring your own and with the help of Café Malmö learn to judge the repairability of your old devices as well! If you are in Malmö drop by at , we start 15.30

@jessika_richter As part of the workshop I made an "impromptu museum (?) of obsolete (?) devices". I brought some of the devices that I had kept over the years or found in bins, so participants could experience the specific ways in which smartphones and tablets become obsolete. All devices were in very good shape hard-ware wise.

Some of the devices I brought:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1( 2012) running LineageOS from 2020.

Samsung Galaxy S2 (2011). running Postmarket OS form 2023

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 (2013) running oftware Samsung version of Android Kitkat c.a. 2014.

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015) running Samsung version of Android Nougat c.a. 2019 .

I asked participants to both try to load solar.lowtechmagazine.com and some of their favorite sites.

solar LTM loaded well and quick, even on the Samsung Mega with a 2014 browser that other sites would just not load on.

The Galaxy Tab was practically unusable because the 2020 LineageOS interface slowed everything down to a crawl. People tried to open instagram on it but it took so long to load people just gave up.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 was surprisingly snappy and would load all kinds of sites, but the "phone" is otherwise unusable due to missing firmware.

The Galaxy A3 ran extremely slow, but would still load stuff.

@rra@post.lurk.org avatar

Some devices brought by the participants included a 2008 Macbook Pro running the last MacOS version still supported. No issues there, very powerful computer. However, it had to be replaced because it was not powerful enough for the specific workloads for $DAYJOB.

Another was a Fairphone2 which was replaced after the public transport company's app refused to run on the outdated OS. Also the phone would end in boot loops.

An iPhone 5s was replaced after it stopped receiving updates and crucial apps would no longer run on it. Aside from the battery, the phone was in good condition.

@hyphacoop looking at Distributed.Press, and specifically it's API, I think it'd be possible to make this a serverless API proxy for like Cloudflare Workers or similar edge javascript platform; Would require some adjustments to the code, but I think it'd be possible.

@rra@post.lurk.org avatar

@thisismissem @KevinMarks @hyphacoop

So that means that if I build a website template I do not need to build json files separately but can make my HTML be interpretable by AP software? Do you have some sources or guides for this?

rra,
@rra@post.lurk.org avatar

@KevinMarks @thisismissem @hyphacoop Thanks, I've looked at that and tried it but I was more interested in running everything on my own infra, rather than using a third party service.

jfc just attended 45 minutes of digitization propaganda by one of the university administrators. I learned that my university invests on the one hand on Bing Copilot for Faculty™ (generative AI tool) and also massively deploys Inspera proctoring tool out of fear of students using generative AI.

The biggest challenges to the university's "digitalization" strategy are in their view are GDPR and procurement regulations. Playing the innovation fomo card where we are "15 years behind USA and China". Lol. Question time is very limited because they have to go. When I ask about the risks associated with deploying generative AI given what we know now about wrong information etc they were really happy with critical questions and said we need more of those. However, to enable those questions we need to give everyone access to those tools to allow everyone to keep questioning. "It is simply something we need to embrace". We're so so fucked.

@rra a while ago you mentioned the lean infrastructure running your cargo bike collective - a calendar and a combination lock iirc (?) I'm curious what calendar you're using? (looking for a minimalistic calendar solution for something similar right now) thanks for a(ny) potential pointer(s)! :)

rra,

@freebliss hey yes! It was an etherpad actually where people add the dates and times they use it. In the meantime I learned there is a Facebook Messenger group for further coordination, but I do not know what exactly because I don't partake in it and the pad remains authoritative for reservations..

As for locks: it is a keybox mounted outside which contains the two keys to the bike!
