Israel - created by the British, breaking promises to the Palestinians - the Balfour Declaration - the Balfour Betrayal. The west has since provided cover for its 75 years of apartheid, violent oppression, murder of journalists, cultural and environmental vandalism, and now - genocide.
#Iran - its revolution was as a direct result of Western interference, overthrow of their leader, and support for a brutal dictator and western stooge, the Shah.
We don’t talk about it enough but it’s a huge failure that there isn’t more urgency to develop better COVID vaccines.
An Operation Warp Speed for nasal vaccines and more variant proof vaccines would transform our ability to deal with COVID and help us mitigate future pandemics.
There is little pressure or expectation from the general public.
Why?
Because the vast majority think "it's over".
Which is wrong for two reasons:
SARS-CoV-2 is still circulating, 1 in 100 prevalence last time I checked (appreciate an update)
1/10 infected will get long covid - which can mean anything from brain damage to immune dysregulation (leading to other infections), blood clots to chronic fatigue, and organ damage eg liver or heart
@DrALJONES I hope the UK Conservative and Labour parties both suffer a huge hit for their complicity and enabling of this barbaric genocide.
Sadly, I don't think they will.
British media is far too compromised and most ordinary British people don't go seeking out different sources of information. They eat what they're given - the daily mail, the BBC, the guardian, ...
I'm nowhere near pycon and I'm no expert in coding but I am spending a lot of time thinking about what a modern python plotting library should look like - if it were designed around users first, prioritising consistency, minimalism, intuition, low cognitive load, conceptual coherence ..
.. matplotlib/pyplot is powerful but very few would say they love the experience of trying to use it.
"They Used to Say Arabs Can’t Have Democracy Because It’d Be Bad for Israel. Now the U.S. Can’t Have It Either"
"Arab publics favor the Palestinians, the thinking goes, & will vote in governments that act accordingly — & that is a no-go zone."
Now, "the U.S., it seems, can’t have democracy either, lest an American democracy end its support for everything & anything Israel wants to do to the Palestinians."
The xz issue highlights once again that we can't just hope that private sector corporations invest in the #opensource that makes their business (and profits) possible.
Perhaps we need public sector investment in carefully selected open source - and by that I don't mean the big fancy stuff, but the tiny tools that most people don't even know is there - like xz.
After all - how much of the world around us would collapse if all open source vanished at midnight?
I go to this spot some evenings to get away and help my mind decompress and untangle.
It's at the top of a local hill.
A few other people go there too, I suspect for the same reason as they are always peaceful and calm, watching the sea and sun, some chomping on a sandwich or sipping from a thermos.
I sometimes listen to NN Taleb who is fervently against large institutions because they squish good culture. He suggests people who make progress do so despite their employer (academia, govt, corporate).
He gives many examples of historical inventors and discoverers who were lucky enough to have the time and resources to play and tinker.
For me this ties into the idea of UBI to free people up to follow their own instincts and not spend 100% of their time surviving.
Base - chopped garlic, green chillis, onions, and anardana seeds powder/dried seeds .. add the sliced and emptied karelas .. and fry slowly. The karelas will take a long time. Turn occasionally. It's ok if they go charred. Add chopped real tomatos later.
Use a spoon to stuff the empty karelas with what you softened above. Cook more.
Finally fresh coriander, fragile so do last.
Serve with yoghurt and fresh pomegranate seeds and bread (roti, naan).
