“The fact that DTSC has sat on these documents for 44 years — shameful doesn’t begin to describe it,” said Janet Johnson, co-chair of the Richmond Shoreline Alliance.

Curious about the colorful ponds in the South Bay that you see when flying from SFO?

They have a long and storied history in the Bay—including a landmark Clean Water Act win against the Trump administration.

Toxic dust from tires is flowing into waterways from roads and highways, where it kills some species of salmon and trout.

Assemblymember Papan recently introduced legislation to remove these toxic tire particles before they slip into waterways and kill fish:

"In the abstract, this ruling should mean full steam ahead for the water board updating its water quality standards," said Baykeeper science director @jarosenfield, of the new ruling. "In the real world, we have a governor actively resisting new standards because he favors a voluntary approach negotiated with water users in a back room, and is forcing the water board to consider if not adopt it."

As Heal the Bay's Tracy Quinn points out, the Water Board's backtracking on water conservation will make our communities LESS resilient to #ClimateChange and allow water suppliers to continue business-as-usual: "This approach is shocking considering what we know about changing precipitation patterns and California's lip service about preparing for climate change."

It's also ironic that the #Newsom Administration is proposing new dams and a #DeltaTunnel to increase "water supply reliability" while rolling back its own conservation measures! https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-03-13/california-eases-requirements-of-water-conservation-rules #cawater #californiawater #waterislife

The Navy has finally acknowledged what scientists and residents have suspected for years: that toxic groundwater could surface at the Hunters Point Superfund site in SF.

The soil at Hunters Point is contaminated with radioactive material and other toxic substances. That the site could flood from the ground up is terrifying, to say the least!

Happy ! Wetlands are superheroes—they prevent flooding & erosion, provide vital habitat for wildlife, sequester carbon, and filter out pollutants!

But, sadly, the Bay has lots 90% of its historic over the past century. Which is why we need to make sure to preserve those remaining and restore the wetlands we've lost.

Newsom wants you to believe that he's doing everything he can to save California's imperiled salmon -- without the one thing that's desperately needed: FLOWS OF WATER!!
"Without the essential ingredient of a river, which is the flow of water, fish are not going to survive," as Baykeeper science director Jon Rosenfield said, '“The governor is out there promising actions that are not adequate to restore the population."

Most of the Delta lacks standards for how much water should flow through it, and that's a big problem.

"The fish are suffering primarily from a lack of adequate freshwater,” says Baykeeper science director Jon Rosenfield. "Flow is sort of the master variable that affects almost everything with fish."

The lack of adequate flow also helps explain some of the Delta's other problems, such as #AlgaeBlooms

So shameful -- CA companies & government agencies are avoiding environmental regulations by shipping toxic waste across state borders.

“The whole world knows how things function in Mexico,” said Maria Magdalena Cerda Baez, a policy advocate with the Environmental Health Coalition. She said U.S. hazardous waste going to her country is unjust. “How can you be so rich and commit these crimes against people’s health and future?”

Are the Bay Area's systems ready for El Niño? (short answer: No).

Last winter, treatment systems spilled tens of millions of gallons of raw/partially treated sewage into the Bay & city streets. Our executive director Sejal Choksi-Chugh said cities need to upgrade their infrastructure to solve this problem.

“And one of the ones that’s been kicking and screaming the hardest not wanting to change is, surprisingly, San Francisco,” Choksi-Chugh said.

The agency proposed listing the SF Bay-Delta population of longfin smelt as an endangered species, but has failed to meet its deadline.
