Audient EVO 4 question: a colleague has just picked up one of these, uses NVDA, and isn't finding the software to be very accessible. When they open EVO Control, they can't initially tab around, and have to manually move focus to one of the sliders with object nav before tabbing will work. But they're then finding a lot of unlabelled radio buttons, buttons with labels like "M" without context, and so on. Are we missing an updated build or something?

Maybe it's just because I'm an old computer toucher, but I don't as search engines questions. I input query terms. It's faster and more precise. (Or at least it used to be before search engines started ignoring search terms.)

I wonder if this is one of the reasons I bounce off of AI search so hard. Natural language search is worse in at least two ways.

@NVAccess What's the current way of legally getting a copy of Eloquence these days? I assume the only option is Code Factory's SAPI 5 version?

    bryansmart,

@simon @twynn @jcsteh @NVAccess @KaraLG84 I'll happily break any laws to use Eloquence, without the smallest pang of guilt. The number of times I've already been forced to pay for it, over and over, for something that hasn't been updated in over 20 years, is the real crime.

I'm still open to the idea of dropping this course as someone here suggested, but I'd rather not if I can help it. I'd like to find a workaround instead. I'm going to email the instructor to see if I can use a different database system and modify the assignments accordingly. Another idea, is there some other more software that can open and modify MS Access database files?

    simon, to random

I'm glad all this AI stuff exists now, but it seems fragmented. I'm paying for ChatGPT Plus because it's a great iPhone app, but using the API on Windows. We have an NVDA addon that sends images to all the major models, but no way to chat with them normally. I wish we had just one nice cross-platform app that exposed all the different APIs and models across all the major companies, and allowed us to put in our own API keys. $20 for ChatGPT Plus is a truly ridiculous cost if you consider how far $20 of API credit will go, especially on the newest models. And I do have privacy concerns with the idea of sending images to two different companies to have them described. Maybe I need to look at one of the existing self-hosted web interfaces for this purpose and start making accessibility fixes where necessary.

    bryansmart,

@simon VOLlama is that. Blind guy wrote it. Runs on Windows and Mac. Works with local models via Ollama, or talks to APIs. Works with attachments like images. Uses RAG so models can use your own data in queries.

Question someone asked me a couple days ago: "So I heard your instance isn't blocking Threads... are you concerned?"
Uh. About... what, exactly? The 169 accounts on Threads that my instance is aware of pretty much have 0 interaction with my instance. There's a time and a place for domain blocking. 99% of problems can be solved at the user level. If you wouldn't block mastodon.social because of a few spammers, you shouldn't block threads.net.
Follow-up: "But Meta has no business on the fediverse!"
And Google has no business doing email, but you're a Gmail user. If you don't want to use Threads, don't make an account on Threads. But not allowing someone to talk to you because they want to be on Threads is a terrible reason to not allow someone to talk to you.

So, this might be a longshot, but I'm kind of wondering if anyone even remotely knows what I'm talking about, or can give me some pointers.

When I was a kid, I got a cassette tape, I believe for Christmas, of Bugs Bunny hosting some sort of trivia show, with Daphie, Sylvester, Yosemity Sam, Tweedy and others as contestants. He would ask them trivia questions and they would give him often funny wrong answers. Over time, though, Bugs would elliminate the contestants for various reasons. I don't remember why, though. The only one I do remember is Sylvester trying to eat Tweedy. At the very end, someone overthrew Bugs and forced him to be a contestant on their new show or something. I think some of it was loosely based on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but I'm not sure. It's been over 20 years since I heard this tape, and I only remember very specific moments from it. But I would instantly recognize it. There's a small chance I still have it, and maybe I'll digitize it although the quality might be pretty bad.

Anyhow, I'd love to know what this tape actually is called so I could look it up and see if there's a digital version I could get. Does anyone have any clue of a possible name or other lead I could search?

I was today years old when I discovered you can connect a Brailliant BIx and a Mantis to an iPhone and work them in tandem. The Braille shows up accurately on both and both can be used for typing, as well as navigating. The catch is to do this, you need two HID displays. it's freaking cool though!

Blind Sonos users have an important and rare opportunity to make our presence felt and our displeasure heard about the massive regression in the new mobile apps.

Next Tuesday 14 May between 2 and 5 PM US Eastern time, three senior Sonos staff are conducting an “ask me anything” (AMA) session in the Sonos community. In attendance will be Diane Roberts, Senior Director of Software Development, Kate Wojogbe, Senior Director of User Experience, and Tucker Severson, Director of Product Management.
These are the key people in the company who agreed to the app being released in the inaccessible state it’s in, and they are the key people who need to take fixing it seriously.
Many people want to take some action that makes a difference. This is something you can do.
You can bookmark the page for the AMA. It is, https://en.community.sonos.com/events/sonos-app-redesign-ama-6

Try to become familiar with the forum before Tuesday, because while it isn’t completely inaccessible, it’s not the best and a little quirky. You should be able to sign in with your Sonos ID.
Perhaps compose your question thoughtfully ahead of time and have it on your computer, so you can paste it into the AMA when it goes live. It will not hurt for Sonos to understand how upset and inconvenienced many of us are by what they have done. We can do that firmly while remaining polite.
They need to understand, the best way to make us go away is to fix what they broke. We won’t be quiet until we get back what they took from us.
    Happy contributing.

Hey if Sonos can just up and screw their UI then I can just up and decide to never use them for future speakers. Time to check the resale value of this garbage in case they can't fix the UI accessibility like yesterday.

    jscholes,
    @jscholes@dragonscave.space avatar

@nick #Sonos has replaced its app not because they truly think the app is better. But because they can replace specialised Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS teams with one generic team who know how to use cross-platform tools.

It goes beyond that, though. Look at the ideas behind the new home screen, which essentially can be described as: "put what you want on it". Is that primarily a user-facing improvement? No.

Rather, it's a reason to not rely on designers who can carefully think through information architecture, viewport sizes, user flows, and the best ways to present information. Make it the user's problem so that they can fire the people whose responsibility it used to be, or move them to another team where they won't be able to do their best work and will eventually quit and not be replaced.

This update goes way beyond #accessibility. It's a fundamental shift in how they do business, and it will be shit for everyone. That, more than the lack of #VoiceOver support, is what will probably cause me to move away from their ecosystem.

Thought about maybe making a user script or web extension to improve the of the web app. Unfortunately, after logging in, I repeatedly get an "Internal Server Error", and a message in the console that reads:

    > TypeError: Cannot set property message of [object Object] which has only a getter.

People really need to understand how far this goes beyond accessibility. The new tech is a low-effort, low-quality mess. It does not work well for anybody, which I suppose is one depressing type of equity.

TL;DR: Avoid setting heading levels greater than six (6). This applies whether using aria-level or the proposed headingstart HTML attribute. Use HTML <h#> elements whenever possible.

Throwing this out there for anyone who might be interested in participating or who would just like a place to find potentially interesting books. :)

We are currently voting on a self-help/psychology genre, the results for which will be announced tonight. The winners will be discussed on May 18 and June 1 at 8:00 pm eastern.

Message me if you have any questions, but otherwise anyone is free to check it (and us) out!

We have text-based social and creative writing chats on WhatsApp, and our book discussions take place over Zoom.

I'm also working on making the site more visually formatted/pleasing.

I want to file an issue on Github about some accessibility issues with the log viewer. I want to explain what is actually wrong with the code, not just describe what I can't access and how my screen reader behaves. I'm not familiar enough with HTML and especially Javascript to make heads or tails of it. Would anyone like to help me diagnose this?
