MY FELLOW FEDIVERSE GEEKS - PLEASE HELP!

I wish to abandon YouTube because they are absolute fucking dickheads. I currently have 28K subscribers for 141 vids.

My current YT channel is a mix of my original music videos, gear reviews and other bits and bobs.

Which Peertube server would you recommend me to join?

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Jyoti I have a good home at Spectra.video. Don't know if it suits your needs, but the owner ( @deadsuperhero ) is a cool dude.

@Tijn Ooh-ee! Made by my chums at Cloak & Dagger. Lovely gents. Absolute bonkers, too. Made a game with one of them for an AdventureJam.

DOS gamers of Masto, what was the first game you played that required you to learn how to configure DMA/IRQ for sound? For me it was the original XCom. I played it without sound effects for a full year before I learned how to configure it properly.

Terror Sites were genuinely terrifying as I had no way of knowing if a Chrysalid was dead or just stunned without standing over the body and checking the inventory screen.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@theLobdegg I think it was around the time I got my own 486 which had a SoundBlaster 16 in it. Previously, we had a 386 with an old 8-bit SoundBlaster in it, and I remember learning the hard way that regular SB expects IRQ 7 and SB16 expects IRQ 5.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@theLobdegg It might have been Day of the Tentacle, actually.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@theLobdegg Honestly, I never thought of myself as a "Sierra fan." I just like adventure games in general, and the truth is I actually played way more LucasArts games as a kid than Sierra games. Space Quest just happens to be my favorite game(s).

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn @theLobdegg Hahaha... Well, I'm a very mood/vibe based person. Sometimes I'm in the mood for just chilling out and having a laugh; sometimes I'm in the mood for having my ass kicked. Same with music.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@SonnyBonds @Tijn I'm of two minds about the "death" thing. I think, as a rule, it should be telegraphed properly that you're in a dangerous situation. It should also be an expected player rule to save their games often. Then again, stuff like the "mystery hole" on Kerona in SQ1 is a great unexpected death, and I wouldn't be without it.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn @SonnyBonds Yeah, or having the boulder that's ON THR GROUND roll over you if you're standing in the wrong spot in KQ1. I mean, how does that even work from a physics point of view?

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn @SonnyBonds I think the Revolution games, like Beneath a Steel Sky, got the balance right. For the most part you're safe, and when you're not, the game really goes out of its way to tell you.

Spent the morning playing around with making new synth sounds and trying to find that right sound I want for the songs I'm writing.

I like the bass synth, and I came up with this neat spooky synth that kinda sounds like voices. I've named that Sytrus preset EVP.

Not a song. Should be thought of as more of a sort of jam session with my new synth sounds. Just trying to establish a vibe.

Loops once. Is about a minute long before the loop.

I think for the actual songs I'll try and use less guitar to create some space. It feels like a real wall of sound, and I think I want to avoid that.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Gwendolyn I dig it! The synths make it sound super ominous and makes me think of music from a mid-90s FPS. If you need live drums, let me know!

Final toot for the day. Over my years I have learned that being AGAINST something sucks energy and leads to nowhere mid to long term. Understanding a problem and building solutions, being FOR something and trying as many different FORs as possible, because a lot of ideas will fail and you should accept that gives me positive energy and teaches me a lot. So don’t get lost in defining problems. Build solutions. Share them. See if they get traction. Iterate. Try again. It’s the better way to live!

Been struggling with writing music and I wonder if I've maybe made a discovery...

I love metal. I listen to a ton of metal. I want to make the songs I'm working on metal.

When writing... through the process the songs become progressively more moody and haunting and less actually metal.

I'm finding that as much as I can do it... it feels inauthentic. It feels far off from my creative center. I rarely like the straight metal tracks I make. I almost feel like the heavy distortion and pounding drums need to be more of an accent than the main feature of my stuff.

Is this just me discovering "my style" or a case of struggling to get out of my comfort zone?

It's not like I haven't been trying for years to do styles out of my comfort zone.

So, now I'm asking... Should I drop the dream (at least for now) of putting together a straightforward metal project and just do what comes naturally?

It's this weird thing where I'm examining what I want to do vs what I think I'd actually be good at.

It's so weird... I don't want to make those songs... But I like them more than the songs I want to make.

sqhistorian,
@sqhistorian@dosgame.club avatar

@Gwendolyn No worries. I'm the same, honestly (except my knowledge of musical theory is lackluster at best). I always think "time to kick things into high gear," then I keep that going for a few bars, and then a fucking piano sneaks its way in. I have no idea how that keeps happening.
