“Outrageously” priced weight-loss drugs could bankrupt US health care

Prices would need to be dramatically slashed to avoid increasing the national deficit.

In Norway, that's Espresso House, but same general idea.

(Four shots tho... That's intense.)

@thor I only like Starbucks because it's one of the few places to get an Anglo-style cheesecake around here. Otherwise their coffee is muck.

Wouldn't pay 500 euro for it though.

Although it may be tempting to set up a fascist regime, tidy everything up, dot all the I's and finally get everything done, consider that you may be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It would be an extremely boring and uninspiring society. And people who vote for fascist-leaning political parties are completely blind to this. Who do you think came up with political ideas in the first place? Not your dreadfully boring and orderly lot!

@thor I think this is basically what Singapore did. Singaporean friends tell the guy who turned it around was basically a benevolent dictator.

Every chance I've had to interact with satellite operators in conferences, I've asked them about their plans for dealing with solar storms (I'm particularly worried about Starlink, which requires dozens of maneuvers per day to avoid collisions. What if a large fraction shuts down for a few hours?!)

The universal response to my inquiries has been "Don't worry about that, it'll be fine!"

I guess we're going to find out very soon. https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/

The only time I go into Starbucks is when I need a place to sit for an hour. I avoid the fancy drinks, and pretty much stick to black tea.

Since I feel they over-roast their beans, I avoid their coffee. To me, it doesn’t taste like coffee. It just tastes burnt.

I actually prefer Tim Hortons over Starbucks, and that’s saying something since Tim’s coffee is swill. It’s cheap and at least drinkable if you put cream and sugar in it. In comparison, there’s nothing to disguise Starbucks’ horrid taste.

At the risk of sounding like a hipster – and who doesn’t when it comes to coffee? – I honestly feel that it’s much better to buy light or medium roast beans, preferably from a single coffee plantation. Get yourself a grinder, and grind those beans fresh. Then use an Aeropress, a French press, or a pourover funnel to brew your coffee.

It will be leagues better than Starbucks, and better for your wallet too!

monsoonrains,

@atomicpoet They have nice locations in Germany. Big old buildings with windows overlooking market squares and interesting parts of the city, so a great place to sit and read or work for a bit.

But yeah no. Wouldn't touch their coffee. Usually get a lemonade if it's hot or just tea.

I do like that they do New York cheesecake. It's one of the few places in this country I can get a cheesecake similar to what I get at home.

What a lot of people don’t understand is that I don’t go to the gym to become big.

I pump iron because strictly dieting doesn’t work for me, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to get myself to health simply by eating less.

I’m 225lbs right now but I look leaner. I can now wear regular clothes without looking self-conscious. I no longer have back aches and I can do regular activities without feeling exhausted.

There still is awkwardness, though. When I sleep, I must put a pillow over my shoulder because otherwise, it feels like my head is sleeping on a rock.

monsoonrains,
@monsoonrains@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet The hyperfocus on weight is nonsense and unhelpful in many cases.

I'm over 6 foot and was always 70-80 before I started on fluoxetine. Then what I assume is my 'normal' appetite appeared.

Now I'm always around 100 kilos. Regardless of what I eat or how much I exercise. And people are surprised when they learn that. But that's actually the healthy, proper weight I'm supposed to be. Even if it seems high.

I've watched a number of videos about digital marketing now, and I think I've come to the conclusion that it's in the opposite of my sweet spot. It's not very hard to do, but it's somewhat tedious and repetitive. You're creating funnels and the goal is always a conversion. You put out bait and you reel people in. You fine tune ad campaigns based on metrics. It's automated manipulation.

monsoonrains,
@monsoonrains@mastodon.social avatar

@thor That's the use case the gurus are obsessed with.

Leads, leads, leads.

Even when it don't make sense.

monsoonrains,
@monsoonrains@mastodon.social avatar

@thor Marketing originally is only about sales enablement or education.

A lot of digital marketing is just sales.

Most people don't think about brand awareness properly. Or retaining current customers. Just want more and more leads.

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

monsoonrains,

@Edent The notification would freak me the living fuck out I'd hang up, immediately transfer everything in that account to one of my other accounts and then ask the bank questions later.

That's provided I actually answered my phone in the first place.

England's epic battle is the Battle of Hastings. Norway's epic battle is the Battle of Stiklestad.

"Olaf was a rather stubborn and rash ruler. Modern historians generally agree that Olaf was inclined to violence and brutality. Ironically, he became Norway's patron saint. His canonization was performed only a year after his death by the bishop of Nidaros. The cult of Olaf not only unified the country, it also fulfilled the conversion of the nation, something for which the king had fought so hard."

This violent man was declared a saint by the catholic church.
