I lived through the “this site requires and/or is best in IE” era, and I’d rather burn it all down than return to that.

Some important context as this news breaks:

#WordPress is an open-source project, available at WordPress.org.

One of its co-founders, Matt Mullenweg, is CEO of #Automattic, which runs WordPress.com and owns #Tumblr.

They can’t sell what they don’t have, so “WordPress” here refers to WordPress.com, not self-hosted WordPress instances.

BUT many self-hosted instances use the Jetpack plugin, which does send data to WordPress.com, so that might be sold 🤬

Unsolicited career advice for staff+ engineers:

If someone complements your team, take the time to call out particular members by name.

You’re staff+, and should be visible enough (especially my fellow cishet white dudes). Instead, make it impossible for management to ignore the team members who actually get shit done while you’re in meetings about how we can get shit done faster.

I’ve always been bad at carrying those “buy X, get your X+1 free” punchcards from restaurants.

The one exception is my COVID vaccination card. It’s been full since last year’s bivalent booster, but when I took it with me today the man behind the counter was apathetic.

Let’s say you have 100 people, all equally skilled.

You have 1000 units each of bugs and new feature work. Each person can make progress on one unit per day.

How long will it take to address all bugs and complete the new features?

(1000 bugs + 1000 features) / 100 = 200 days, right?

Not if you have an MBA, it seems. Those features are critical, so I’ll give you 80 days.

The AP has called the #Ohio #SpecialElection in favor of the "No, you may not strip us of rights you fascist fucks" side.

I'm still going to be on edge until it's official, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Assuming this lead holds and we did indeed win, take some time to celebrate but be ready to vote again on November 7. We'll have one (possibly two 🤞) state-wide issues:

1. Protecting the right to bodily-autonomy re: reproductive health
2. Legalization of rec. cannabis (pending)

I’m sorry, but you can’t claim “I don’t follow politics” in America in 2024. Either you’re for democracy or you’re deep in trump’s asshole; there is no middle ground.

If you truly don’t care, a) I wish I could live in your naive, fantasy world and b) please vote for the guy who didn’t attempt an insurrection. Consider it a favor for my daughter and every other little girl who doesn’t want to grow up to become a forced-birth baby factory.

This thread pretty much sums up my thoughts on #Tailwind:

While it can be useful for rapid prototyping, too often our prototypes get shipped as “MVPs”, which are then never given the space to really be cleaned up.

As a result, shit like this lives on and we continue the cycle of “front-end needs to be over-engineered so people will respect us!”

A bit about me: Staff Software Engineer, FOSS contributor, and conference speaker. I've been remote since '14 and have no intention of going back.
