NY cracking down at least a bit on non-street-legal motorcycles on a narrow bike path.

Remember everybody: The whole NY AG case against Trump began because Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing Queens & the Bronx, asked Michael Cohen if he had ever seen the Trump Org overstate assets to one audience and understate them to another.

This is what Congressional questions can do. It is a travesty that most members just rant for 5 minutes and then give witnesses 5 seconds to respond.

Pro-tip: If you are ever held for a felony, do NOT pay a bail bondsman. Pay the bail with a credit card. You will get massive reward points! I once took a trip on having bailed out some friends.

For many of us advocates, the idea hasn't been that bikes in themselves are great for cities & suburbs. Rather, they are a way to wean car-dependent people and places off of cars and into a non-fossil-fuel, more sociable, more appropriate way to get around.

The very innocence, peacefulness, joy and harmlessness of bikes was their selling point to potential riders, to public servants designing streets, and to the drivers who might scare us off the road.

Staten Island leting it rip again. I'd be curious to know how this happens. Anti-mask bias? Anti-vax?

I have often read about the racism on here, and while I believe those who report it, I hadn't been subjected to a fattyverse mob first hand. Today was the first time I saw the general intolerance of fediverse participants unleashed on me -- for asking why people were so opposed to having corporate and commercial entities on here. I think the cultural production of corporate and commercial entities is very important fodder for debate & conversation. Others don't want it

How people use the 34th Ave Open Street (future Paseo Park) in Queens, NY, at 9:30pm on a summer night. It's officially open to cars at 8pm, but there is now a hegemony of pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers can just tell that they need to chill out. This is a successful street.

Time-lapse video showing several light cycles on a street with just one car using the street, to park, while walkers, cyclists, scooter-riders and joggers use the roadway in comfort.

I'm proud to support NYS Focus, a scrappy publication covering New York state politics. It fills a big gap in my knowledge. NYT and other "local" media really don't cover Albany. Here's the sort of thing I'm enjoying:

people: The mayor is cutting budgets "across the board," supposedly including the NYPD. But Council Member Justin Brannan is warning that the NYPD cuts will be reversed at the last minute, while all the other cuts will stay in place.

Don't stand for it. Stop the cuts to education, sanitation, and other human needs, and lock in the NYPD cuts.

Brannan is on here:

This summer is making me more skeptical than ever that there will be "winners" from climate change. It's not like there is some smooth transition of Florida climate to Maryland and Colorado to Alberta. Instead, everywhere on earth is getting more extremes and unprecedented events that kill crops, torch forests, and generally make life unpredictable and intolerable.

It's probably best to stop climate change!

Barbara Wheaton, a culinary historian with positions at Harvard and MIT, spend decades digitizing centuries of recipes in order to provide an AI tool that could, among other things, find recipes to make based on a list of ingredients. It was carefully hand curated and she is now old and not able to work on it and it's not done.

Now, the techbros have created a non-curated version that will help you make "ant poison flavoured jelly."

The basic problem with most AI hype and development that I've seen (as a total outsider) is that the are very few problems where the most important part of the solution is "we need to be smarter!" There are specific problems like protein bending, something something fusion energy, or making better electoral districts. Great. But the real hangup is almost always about political power, not processing power.

Good morning Blackhawk helicopter. Why do I only see military helicopters in NYC when there is a protest movement going strong?

EDIT: The answer is "confirmation bias"

Aircraft track of jolly 11, a Blackhawk helicopter that just flew from Eastern Long Island to New York City and circled some neighborhoods
