When I look at the reported costs of owning and operating an and then I see how aggressively it’s being integrated into and environments, I can only conclude that the idea is to make you all dependent on those tools and then (and only then) make you pay the real price required to make that business viable.

TIL that there are a lot of English words that have been borrowed into German. Especially in advertising and product names, it seems. The transition is not always a smooth one, however.

tealeg,
@tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

@Neverfadingwood another example. Spontex had (or has?) a line of gardening implements that they market for women in Germany (and other EU markets). That doesn't mean what they think it means... :

fwiw -- "manspreading" is not territorial, nor is it an attempt to assert dominance, nor is it misogynistic.

It's just more comfortable, it provide more space and ventilation for our genitals.

That's all it is. And yeah it is inappropriate to do it in crowed seating areas, like trains and waiting rooms. If it impinges on someone else's personal space, then that is rude.

But there's no deeper significance.

tealeg,
@tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

@siblingpastry wait, were you off that day at school? Manspreading is akin to the way ladies used to communicate using only a fan. You can get up to the minute cricket scores and car reviews that way!

tealeg,

@siblingpastry just making a silly joke. Not a critic of any kind.

Okay, while this comes from Teen Vogue, it's not really about fashion. It's more about history and art. And I love it. This is a great article. There's a lot to learn here. 🏳️‍🌈

tealeg,

@rml @elizabethveldon @summeremacs @daviwil I think if you try hard enough you can apply that description to everywhere except maybe Ethiopia.

tealeg,
@tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

@rml @elizabethveldon @summeremacs @daviwil The Americas weren't conquered with the plan of eradication. Theft, subjugation, slavery, sure.. eradication is awful practicality. The history of most European nations looks similar if you look far enough back. I'm sure it's repeated elsewhere, but I'll admit a certain ignorance on that front.

tealeg,
@tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

@rml @elizabethveldon @summeremacs @daviwil You misunderstand my point - that's something that developed over time. I'm not trying to let anyone off the hook. I'm just saying that the plan didn't exist when the first settlers arrived.

I’ve a history of being unimpressed with Apple’s self congratulatory, masturbatory product launches. So take that as context when I say: I don’t know what would make you look more ridiculous: Apple’s Vision Pro device, or actually paying thousands for it. But there’s a possibility that 5 years down the line, there’s a revision of this that costs less, and has been refined, and a good chunk of people are using it. AR is more compelling than VR. So, perhaps this is a Lisa or a pre-3G iPhone?

tealeg,
@tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

@spikeholden Me too, and I agree with what you say. However, you must admit they have done very well making products that way. Can they succeed where Google failed? Maybe. As a company, they're well positioned. The product isn't... yet.

    one of the reasons you might have imposter syndrome is that through talent and experience you have become so good at some things that they appear to be trivial to you. You probably massively undervalue those skills and attributes, and it’s likely you don’t realise that others lack them. This is what I have learned about myself from people joining my industry. Teaching is the hardest thing of all.

    One unexpected outcome of the rise of the we're seeing today might be the death of as the primary interface to the world wide web.

    Not just for the obvious "AI is better" reason, but more fundamentally because whilst most sites were happy with the scraping of their data for search reasons, many are deeply uncomfortable with it being used for training.

    I think robots.txt and noindex are blunt right now.

    tealeg, to random
    @tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

    It’s pretty sad how quickly the hype around AI right now has degenerated into the message that you “must have” some LLM driven plug-in in your browser that’s just another way to steal and monetise your data. At least in the Developer tools space there is starting to be some recognition that it’s not ok to just steal your clients data. Not sure the picture is quite so clear for where they get their original training data though.

    tealeg,
    @tealeg@mastodon.online avatar

    @patricklee @Benjaminblackoak yes - and while we certainly have our neo-nazis (in some regions they're even problematic), most of German society utterly rejects that ideology for good reason. I cannot promise that everyone accepts trans people but it's more socially unacceptable (in my circles) to express hatred towards them - tolerance is the minimum expectation.
