Rap beef is silly. People really die behind this nonsense.

People that say that they love rap beef, do love rappers... But in the same way that people that love dog fights, love dogs. Some people go to NASCAR races to see who the most skilled driver is, and to marvel at the engineering. Other people just go to watch the crashes. Their entertainment is watching you burn.

And like I've also said before, gangster rap is a performance by Black people for white people.🤷🏿‍♂️

I deeply regret buying a laptop for Linux with a hidpi screen. With two external 1080p screens, the scaling is all over the place and barely usable. Dangerously close to getting rid of the laptop and replacing it with a 1080p display one.

ted,
@ted@gould.cx avatar

@popey I just don't use them together. One or the other.

I love the HiDPI though. Wish there were more reasonable HiDPI monitor options.

@popey they want root access on your machine (which is what a apt archive allows) seems suspicious to me.

🤡There's a non-zero percent of the US population that genuinely believes that The NFL, Joe Biden, "The Pentagon" and Taylor Swift, conspired to create a fake relationship and rig the NFL playoffs, so that Taylor Swift could pop out in the middle of the Superbowl halftime show and say "Vote for Biden!"

I wish I was kidding.

Like, not a small percentage either.

@mekkaokereke I know you're suggesting it as a conspiracy theory, but frankly, that sounds awesome.

This is like when Trump promised "taco trucks on every corner" if I voted for Clinton. I did, but alas, no taco trucks. So sad.

So, I once saw a comedian do a routine about those polls they used to do on dance contest shows. Like, call this 900 number to vote if Ronaldo should move up to the next round.

He said, it's weird that the results would be 48% yes, 49% no, 3% undecided. Because that means that hundreds of thousands of people called a toll phone number and paid $1.95 just to vote "I don't know" in a TV poll.

People want to participate and feel like part of something, even if they don't have a good answer.

ted,
@ted@gould.cx avatar

@evan I think this was the goal of Facebook with the Like button. Though I'm not sure it really satisfies that need.

I wonder if this is a case for some sort of AI to do a first pass, where the poster would see those comments as likes or dislikes, but would let other more substantive comments through.

Another teacher asked me an interesting question today. "What do you think about this idea of replacing calculus with statistics. After all statistics is more useful."

That's probably true on the surface, but I can't say I'm a huge fan of the "replace calc with stats" craze... even as I lament the poor understanding many people have of stats. It's obvious we need more education on interpreting datasets and visualizations.

But, there is a subtext to this argument I dislike. 1/

ted,
@ted@gould.cx avatar

@futurebird really great points.

I have advocated for adding stats to the base curriculum because I feel like it has become critical to exist in our society. Feels like even a weather forecast requires a little understanding of stats. Much less things like elections.

But having a well thought out curriculum is key. And I don't think stats should ever be a capstone for math students. Everyone needs it.

Do you think there is a way to fit "stats literacy" in without replacing another course?

ted,

@popey you know the $5 limit came more from banking restrictions than anyone wanting it.

Turns out most banks look at app stores as money laundering operations (okay, I see it) and aren't keen on it unless you're huge.
