In which I passionately argue that "chat" is indeed a valid second-person pronoun:

Fascinating when a total stranger on here links out one of my posts to talk about how I'm a terrible person and all the men who follow and reply to me are just here to educate me. Lmfao I wonder what the difference is. I wonder if I made my profile pic an equation what they would infer instead.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

@tojiro @mekkaokereke the SUVs and trucks won 🙃

A combination of poorly-designed regulation (CAFE) and an arms race to have the tallest, heaviest vehicles (so people feel safe driving around other huge vehicles) has fucked our roads.

That, and, I'm sure the profit margins are much meatier on luxury vehicles than on economy cars. Not to mention that increasing inequality means most people who used to be in the market for a new economy model are now buying used.

Worst of all possible worlds.

"Consumer AI is just the new search" anecdote: [1/3]

Casual non-techy coworkers yesterday were talking about using excel reports to analyze data & turns out two of the people use to know how to do something in excel.

So, before this stuff, if you were like, "how do I do X in Excel" in google, you'd get a bunch of hits and then have to wade through the results to see which link was actually what you were looking for, then test out if their solution works.

@renwillis

"regular search absolutely sucks"

--> funny enough, also ChatGPT's fault

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

what does the word "procgen" mean to you

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I mean, I also firmly believe that most procgen interactive experiences are bad, but that's a taste issue and not a moral judgment

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva

It's very complex, because I know there are people who love games, art, etc. with some kind of procedural generation, and you can put a lot of work into creating a procgen system that creates really nice results.

But also, procedurally-generated games feel like empty content to me. Even Hades. The parts that do appeal are the parts that are hand-crafted, like the story and unique bosses.

Procgen art for me runs the gamut from "fun toy" to upsetting. I'm almost never impressed by it.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I would make a distinction between simulation or procgen as a starting point/background deatil, and procgen as the primary mechanic.

A civ-type game that generates a random world by simulating plate tectonics, wind and weather patterns, etc. or an open-world game where foliage is auto-placed are fine.

So while I don't love e.g. Dwarf Fortress or Minecraft, I do like them more than most roguelikes.

The more of the game is gameplay-focused procgen, the emptier and more pointless it feels.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I guess to answer your question more directly, "yes, I always view procgen negatively" - but again, it's not a moral judgment; it's a "me" thing. I'm glad people are making art that other people who are not me enjoy.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I like the technical qualities of what you are doing; the procgen seems to be largely a way to demonstrate it?

Perhaps I don't "get" your art, but I do enjoy the things you post?

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva that does seem broad; like, is an art tool that fills a surface in an image with a realistic-looking texture be procgen in the same way as 99% of Starfield is?

If you define it that broadly, I don't think there's anything I can really say about it.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva in my defense, I'm pretty dumb

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I believe you!

But there's a vast spectrum from "the textures on the bushes in this landscape are procedurally-generated" to "the entire landscape you will be traversing as the primary goal of the game is procedurally-generated".

How I feel about these are extremely different, to the point I consider them different things conceptually?

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

I’m interested in a lot of transit activism in N America but I swear people would think you’re a total weeb if you talk about transit in places with good transit. Trying to imagine talking to people in Singapore or Hong Kong or Seoul about.. loving trains

I think they would back tf away from me and run away.

Like my friend always says ‘I don’t want to be a transit fan. I just want great transit’

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte I think it's "look at these other countries with people who look like us where the government still appears to work and people don't seem to be in a state of constant precarity".

(In other words, white people just see other white people and don't necessarily realize that e.g. there are still major cultural differences. But also I relate to the frustration with how awful certain things are here that we could totally fix.)

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte yes, but then there is also the racism

(with faith and perseverance, someday we will sauté the racism)

@tess@mastodon.social avatar

Things that will absolutely make me disbelieve your fake generic "English" accent:

  • Failure to differentiate between /ɒ/ and /ɔ:/ in either length or quality
  • Failure to differentiate vowel length in general
  • /ʌv/ for "of"
  • "truck", "cookie", "flashlight", etc.
  • failure to use linking /ɹ/ when it would be dialectically appropriate
  • failure to use "different to" when it would be dialectically appropriate

(and don't even get me started on fake Boston accents lol)

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

This post brought to you by every fantasy role-player who ever thought that doing an accent would give their character more gravitas but instead ended up making them sound like an extra from a high school Shakespeare production.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

Did you know that in General American English, vowel quality is largely allophonic and primarily conditioned by syllable codas?

Did you also know that pretty much no other English dialect does that, and that "long" and "short" vowels are actually long and short?

(Now you do.)

I don't actually have time today to work on any side projects, but I thought I'd run through the basic setup steps for MonoGame aaaand

./bin/Debug/net6.0/MyGame
bash: ./bin/Debug/net6.0/MyGame: cannot execute: required file not found

... which required file ._. ???

I think this sort of thing means it tried to dynamically link something and failed. I run into this whenever I try to run loose builds of Linux games on , but idk what to do about it.

@aeva "Wayland" is a curse word when it comes out of my mouth, 100% of the time

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva I HAVE INDEED

(what an absolutely terrible environment, especially for testing)

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@aeva Wayland is the gcc of windowing systems

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@oblomov @aeva eh, that was probably unfair to gcc. It's gotten marginally better since the mid 2000s.

Then again a lot of that is probably improvement in the C++ spec and not the gnu project.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @aeva that's because every distribution of Wayland has a different set of extensions built in, providing subtly (or sometimes radically) different functionality! Isn't Wayland great?
