Controversial opinion: C++ is good, actually.

The secret is that all languages are good.

grimalkina, to random
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @grimalkina counterpoint: C++ and C# both slap

They (in their modern incarnations, at least) let me express what I want to express, whether it's large-scale structure, functional data processing, or duck-typed utility code.

Java is also good; it's just unnecessarily verbose compared to its cousins.

the wildest founder group chat i’m in rn is discussing how many people have dealt with employees two-timing and holding multiple jobs

remote work relies so much on trust, and yet there is so little of it sometimes

tess,

@triketora counterpoint though... like, if you did have a second job but still got your work done and weren't breaking your NDA or non-compete, would it be that big of a deal?

People become so obsessed with whether other folks are "getting away with something" that they lose sight of their own core metrics.

Plunger help!

We have an elongated low-flow toilet. This is a pretty standard toilet for accessible bathrooms. However, none of the standard plungers can seal the drain well enough to actually... plunge?

We've tried cup and accordion-types; the groove at the front of the drain prevents any of them from sealing the hole properly.

Has anyone else had this issue? Did you go with a Really Big Plunger or one of those hand-pump things, or something else entirely?

Americans still talking about how awful the 10/7 attacks were and constantly posting about how unhinged pro-Palestine protestors are reads to me exactly the same as people from Texas talking about how traumatic 9/11 was and how unhinged the anti-war protestors were six months into us carpet-bombing Afghanistan.

It's fine to be upset, but to not even acknowledge the reasons for the protests is, frankly, batshit.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

10/7 was inevitable as long as Gaza remained an open-air prison camp blockaded by Israel.

The protests are inevitable given the current displacement - and in many cases, outright slaughter - of innocent civilians.

If you don't at least acknowledge the latter truth, I don't know what to say to you. Clearly, you have weighed the lives of two groups of people so profoundly differently that you fail to acknowledge the basic humanity of the other.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

There's this cycle in which an oppressed people lash out against their oppressors, who then use that as an excuse to double down on their oppression.

Historically, the way out has been to goad the oppressor into such flagrant acts as to embarrass the general populace, making the oppression (if not the oppressors) politically unpopular.

The goading can be peaceful protest (MLK), or violence (Northern Ireland). The more isolated the group is, however, the easier it is to ignore peaceful protest.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

In this historical context, therefore, the Hamas attacks were basically inevitable. The question was only how Israel would respond.

They've taken the bait, and the result had been wanton destruction and a huge hit to their global reputation.

This was my thought and fear when I first heard about the attacks: I was unsurprised that it had happened; I also feared for the Palestinian people who would suffer from the equally inevitable collective punishment meted out by a hard-line regime.

@grimalkina one of the great things about living in a city is that you kind of can't help but be part of a community, even if it's just the other folks in your apartment building

I think one of the things suburbia does to people is make them think they have to look out for themselves because nobody else will. The sad thing is, they're probably not even wrong.

(Though, also: nobody is actually going to break into your crappy house, Jennifer.)

Lambda School /BloomTech is old news; always talked about like it was run by Satan himself by all of us who worked on actual education and learning access issues in tech.

But what's not old news and will always emerge again is that probably now people will just be more biased against e.g. bootcamp learners who are trying their damndest to claw into a better life, rather than taking it out on the men who find toying with education a way to make their own terrible imperium

Something a lot of white folk don't realize happens to Black people a lot:

When there is a competition between a Black person and a white person for a coveted prize, if the white person wins, they're celebrated. If the Black person wins... they're asked to share the prize with the white person that came in second place.😮

This happens to Black women more often than Black men.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke so much bigotry is done - often by men - in order to protect "fragile" white women (who mostly don't need protecting)

Black woman wins? Give the white woman a prize too.

Trans woman wins? Ban them from the competition forever.

Look: your pretty, socially acceptable little white lady didn't win. Skill issue. Deal with it.

breathing a sigh of relief that my computer still rates as "very high" on the FFXIV 7.0 benchmark

I will have to give up distant object LoD, at least at first. I'll probably tune the system further and see if I can't get it back on without it feeling bad.

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

The new engine looks... good? I'm really impressed with a few things:

  • my character still looks like her even with the upgraded facial detail
  • the foliage rendering, especially how it moves when you walk through it
  • the better, more detailed shadows on everything, including (and especially) self-shadowing

FFXIV went from looking like a 2010 Square-Enix game to looking like a 2020 Square-Enix game.
