Thinking about how Mozilla is "pivoting to AI" but DeepSpeech, one of the very few "AI" products you could possibly find a positive use for (pure-local speech recognition), is not only a Mozilla product but so abandoned that you actually have to downgrade to Python 3.9 to run it

In other words: "Die a disillusioned jetpack fan or live long enough to become the fraudster who cooked up the jetpack lie you despise."

A personal responsibility solution to

  • "ebooks have libraries over a barrel"
  • "ebook hold queues are too long"
  • "don't spend so much time on your phone" problems

(If you live near your local public library; e.g. most American cities)

USE YOUR PHONE TO PLACE A HOLD ON A PAPER COPY

  • shorter waits
  • library doesn't pay Overdrive/Libby rent-seeking fees
  • less time spent on screens
  • occasionally get to take a walk or bike to the library
trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

See for example why the paper books are so much easier to get a copy, too

My kid decided he liked the sneaking part of the Spiderman 2 game, and so we went looking for "Stealth" games and all of them require you to be a murderer or hitman.

I want a "stealth" game where you're trying to take pictures of mob bosses doing dirty deals, grift past the receptionist, pick the lock on the safe, and cat-burgle your way out the upstairs window. No need to murder anybody. maybe a little light kung fu.

Okay really I just want a playable LEVERAGE

For learning about products, Mastodon "word of mouth" seems very definitely superior to search and reviews in the usual (far from credible) places.

Asking about travel laptop backpacks, I learned about, got feedback on the following brands that did not appear prominently when Googling (or Kagi-ing or Amazon-ing) laptop backpacks generically:

Jandd
Nomatic
Osprey
Quechua
Rickshaw
Tom Bihn
Tatonka

Also Targus, which does show up more easily. Plus, I got a kind offer of an extra!
