We've made some decisions regarding Haidra and Pachli as Nivenly projects. First up, Haidra: https://nivenly.org/blog/2024/04/15/haidra-decision/

Huge announcement today: Microsoft is investing an additional $10 million to make Rust a first-class supported language in our internal build systems, plus donating an additional $1 million to the Rust foundation.

bindgen (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-bindgen) is now using cargo-dist (thanks @axodotdev) and cargo-release (thanks @epage), tools that help reduce the tedium of releasing software

Calling people you disagree with "melodramatic", "unserious", and questioning their technical acumen is not a way to navigate technical disagreements. Those are rhetorical tactics meant to make people feel bad and get them to shut up.

Bully behavior like this has no place in the Rust community, and we need to call it out when we see it. Disagreeing is fine. Even "bad" or poorly reasoned arguments are fine. But belittling and insulting others absolutely never is.

tshepang,

@Archivist what about the crate system is fostered by this attitude

tshepang,

@mitsuhiko
how would you handle this if you also felt Boats was being a bully (and I ask because you are complaining that someone is complaining about what they feel is worth complaining about, and you don't really state why that complaint is unwarranted/wrong)

When are we going to take Rust parsing seriously? Firefox 117.0.1 (and also Chromium, which means all Electron apps) had to fix a libwebp buffer overflow that could lead to remote code execution, and now Firefox 118.0.1 (and also Chromium, which means all Electron Apps) has to fix a libvpx buffer overflow that could lead to remote code execution just two weeks later. These are just two C libraries used by ALL browsers and many programs, handling remote input in an unsafe way!

tshepang,

@soller sad that Firefox seems to have stopped adding more new Rust components (or at least this page was last updated nearly 3 years ago https://wiki.mozilla.org/Oxidation)

so kool seeing improvements in the version control space

interestingly, above tools are all written in \0/

Lol, have a look at with their new "feed" and the _feed_back people are giving them:

(sorry for all the - totally intended)

https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/categories/feed

They basically say: "Give us our old feed back!"

https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/66244

@github What can you say about this? I haven't seen any GitHub staff answer the concerns people have. And don't tell me this is a bug!

Your "platform" seems dead, rotten by algorithms.

So time to leave GitHub behind, I guess.

tshepang,

@janriemer I never noticed any of this because my landing page (and pinned tab) is /notifications

Relevant article about shells, and how Nushell pushes the boundaries further. I highly recommend reading it.

I would agree many UI changes in all manner of tools seem to be change for its own sake (where improvements are not clear, or worse, where the UX feels worse), as if the decision makers need to feel productive

nice anecdote in that maybe 100m+ user products attract the wrong decision makers, due to them being excessively lucrative, the kind of products most product managers will never have control over

One of the ideas that people have suggested for my YouTube channel (https://YouTube.com/@timClicks) is to do code reviews/walkthroughs. Would that be interesting to you? Do you have any suggestions for crates to investigate/explain?

It occurred to me today that the social value of the open-source work I do in my free time has probably been an order of magnitude more useful to the world than everything I've ever done as a paid employee. Needing to seek a wage almost certainly makes me a less productive member of society than I would otherwise be.

tshepang,

@HistoPol
ah, in the current world, the less wealthy have the world set up against their success, so I would rather have them get preferential acceptance in fancy institutions, but more importantly, would rather other institutions close the gap of excellence (because prestige is a form of discrimination)
