Um, so, I have cancer.

It looks like I should be ok. But it's a scary and risky path forward.

I could also be hit by a bus at any point.

This cancer thing is just pushing me to set up more robust emergency support for this community instance.

@recursive I was at a mixed-arts event where a friend of mine was presenting, & she was one of the presenters. She led us through a simple(-ish) knot-form (with the length of rope we arrived to find on our seats). It was fun & I was totally intrigued because I draw a lot of (imaginary) knots but never actually play with them physically

I finally figured out what unsettles me so much about AI generated "art."

It's the complete misapprehension of what creatives actually create.

Art isn't "content" as a commodity to be sold or packed around other products.

Creatives are visionaries.

We don't really buy art, it's more like we pay rent to look at new worlds through their eyes. Whether for wayfinding or escapism, we say: "yes, I'd like to reside in a world like this for a little while."

It isn't a product, its a shared dream.

The Shoah after Gaza

There is too much in this incredible LRB essay and lecture by Pankaj Mishra for me to in any way adequately summarise; please read or listen to it all. He is right; what is happening now is shaking the foundations of the post 1945 moral universe (if there ever really was one). But what will come next? As he says:

could have been my offspring, a nonbinary teen defending their trans best friend—so many of the same interests; I recognized this kid as soon as I saw their picture & read about them. Shakes me to my core.
The only difference between Nex & my kid & their friends is that we live in San Francisco, where the intensive hate-campaigns have been reaching us largely through news & social media, not yet on our doorstep or shaping school policy.

I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!
