Remember when was shooting down Yemeni drones and missiles?

They had no problem letting use their airspace to attack .

The map shows an attack on Syria, BTW. That area in the Jordan / Syria border is the area controlled by US forces in Syria.

If Israel wants to attack any site in Lebanon, it can do so from the shoreline (and likewise areas in West Syria).

tzafrir,
@tzafrir@tooot.im avatar

@faab64 @palestine @israel

What are your sources for that? In order for Israel to attack the Bakaa valley through Jordan it has to pass not far from the well-defended Damascus. And generally in Syria that is covered by anti-aircraft radars.

(That said, I have not seen any report about 30 civilians killed)

tzafrir,
@tzafrir@tooot.im avatar

@faab64 @palestine @israel

Thanks for the reference to Reuters.

The story I see there is:
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/civilians-military-killed-after-israeli-strikes-aleppo-syrian-army-says-2024-03-29/

"Syria's defence ministry said Israeli strikes hit [...] Aleppo [...], killing a number of civilians and military personnel."

[They also blame Idlib rebels in related attacks]

"Three security sources told Reuters that 33 Syrians and six Hezbollah fighters had been killed in the strikes."

So: not exactly. It's really not clear that those Syrians are civilians.

tzafrir,
@tzafrir@tooot.im avatar

@faab64 @palestine @israel

And note that this is only based on Syrian sources.

tzafrir,
@tzafrir@tooot.im avatar

@faab64 @palestine @israel

I don't trust Syrian sources blindly. IIRC there are also sources that report in the name of the Syrian Opposition (from London) and tend to have reasonably good reports regarding whatever happens in Syria.

Funnily enough, 11 of the 12 members of the security council supported the draft.

Earlier on you criticized the veto power. Now you see it in action and see why it is needed (because the Security Council has no real power of its own).

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant to write "11 out of 15", of course

(Originally I meant to write the incorrect number 12, because 15-3, but then remembered that one abstained, and fixed it to 11, but the number 12 managed to get in as a thinko).

If you c,aim to be the sovereign ruler for a land, you are responsible for everything that comes from there.

An attack with an intended goal of destroying Israel came out of the Gaza Strip on Oct 7th. It means that they were responsible. They attacked.

Once again: they attacked, and therefore must incur the cost.

The attack was originally planned before Ben-Gvir was in power. It was not desolved when Netanyahu was removed of power.

Looks like a “close source” to is very busy these days. Forgetting who’s keeping the lights on in , “they” (Netanyahu presumably) say this:

“Israel isn't sponsored by the U.S., we expect America to dismantle Hamas and not our cabinet”

Is Netanyahu preparing trying to portray Biden as supporter … 🤷‍♂️ The Hebrew edition has an expanded quote:

"Israel is not a protectorate of the United States, but rather an independent and democratic state. We expect our American friends to act to overthrow the terrorist regime of Hamas - not the elected government in Israel."

[*] The Hebrew source used the term protectorate, not “sponsored” as was translated for the English edition. Israel is also not a democracy, since it doesn’t offer equal rights to all its citizens, such as personal freedoms etc., and it describes itself as “Jewish state”.

Elections to municipalities were supposed to happen on end of October 2023, and were postponed. Eventually happened on March.

General Israeli elections are scheduled on October 2026 (previous ones were October 2026). Many people want early elections, but there's no strictly legal requirement for that.

And sure, Netanyahu would probably lose elections now.

Just to understand the BS of Biden about a port in Gaza, remember that there are these land entries into Gaza available RIGHT now.

It's truly sickening to read and listen to all the nonsense about Biden using American Navy to set up a port of "entry" into Gaza while ignorijg the fact that there are 7 points of entry to the besieged Gaza, with over 130 trailer trucks waiting to be approved by IDF in Rafah and 100s of Jewish extremists blocking the passage of trucks via Karam Abu Salem border crossing.

The goal is not to help palestinians, it is to set-up military access and a way to deport Palestinians from Gaza in the name of humanitarian intervention.

The Times of Israel has reported that the Israeli military detected the activation of Hamas phones using Israeli SIM cards 6 hours before the attack on October 7th.

This reporting suggests that the Israeli military had prior knowledge to the attack and most likely allowed it to happen.

It's a real story. The thing is, such things have already happened several times before. So it wasn't a definite red flag. However, there were also other warning signs. So a tactical team was put on the alert (although not the whole units on the border).

Some people mentioned an issue with the link, so I repeat it.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/hours-before-hamas-attack-idf-noticed-hundreds-of-terrorists-activating-israeli-sims/

But that's only half of the story. The other half is internal Israeli politics.

Israeli journalists knew about this sim story for quite some time. Israeli censorship asked them not to publish it as it exposes intelligence capabilities. They agreed also because it wasn't a big deal:

There were other warning signs, and this was already discussed by journalists. But somehow noone considered such a large scale attack.

So, why did this story suddenly some up?

"The right to exist" is so basic that is normally taken for granted. It's a basic element of sovereignty. For instance, article 51 of the United Nations Charter:

"Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations [...]".

https://www.un.org/en/about-us/un-charter/full-text

(That charter assumed that the UN has a much more active role than it has today)

    / Ben-Gvir: “lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence”

    During a cabinet meeting, far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir clashed with Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi over rules of engagement along the border. Ben-Gvir argued that clear directives were needed to prevent another attack, saying lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence as potential militants.

    The heated exchange reflects tensions between the military and the new right-wing government over policies toward Palestinians, with hawkish ministers pushing for tougher measures and clearly illegal measures, despite warnings from security officials and the international community.
