What is your preferred material for interchangeable needles?

I still consider myself somewhat of a recent knitter and while I’ve tried a few materials I’ve not quite settled on any particularly. I got the cheapest set of interchangeable needles I could get locally (KnitPro Trendz) which is acrylic and I already had to buy a spare because I broke one needle when I accidentally sat on...

@kurobita Definitely steel. Sometimes I use bamboo for super slippery yarn but I almost always change them for the steel ones at some point.

A fun game I play sometimes:

When I have the walk signal and a car stops in the crosswalk, I run my hand over the hood or back window of the car as I walk around it.

It's not illegal, but since when you're driving your proprioception expands to consider the car an extension of your body, it feels extremely violating for the person behind the wheel.

Which is hilarious.

Sometimes I'll finish by looking down at my fingers, making a disgusted face, and wiping my hands on my coat.

@venite@mastodon.nl avatar

@tess I sometimes give a friendly knock on the back window. My partner is quite sure this is what will get me killed.

Weird realization: all my favorite literary critics are fusty, grumpy, conservative types - Harold Bloom, Samuel Johnson, and (forgive me) CS Lewis. I wonder why. Maybe just because when they're not fusty fogeys they get into Freudy-y continental philosophy babble and I can neither tell what's going on or derive anything from it?

venite,
@venite@mastodon.nl avatar

@ZachWeinersmith totally honest question: which parts of Lewis are you reading where he is fusty and grumpy? Because I like me a grumpy critic and I only know him as (painfully) earnest, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, and informing me that I should be having more fun in the sack.

I have a question for the Mastodon crowd. One thing I miss from the dirty bird site is the translation button. As a less techy old crone I would appreciate any tips for how to quickly read & reply to those speaking in another language.
I'm using a meme to get your attention 😁

Learning a new knitting cast on method today via step by step images, which is always a challenge for a left-handed knitter like me. (I learn better with images as opposed to video.)

My steps on a Mac:

  1. Save the images to your desktop
  2. Open in the Preview app and make sure the image format accepts edits (fun fact, webp does not)
  3. Under tools, choose 'Flip horizontal’ and save!
  4. Repeat for all images

It's such a pain, but now the visual instructions make sense to me. Hooray!

@starshaped we’re Musselburgh buddies!! I learned that cast-on for this pattern too. It’s so cool!

@knitting Has any of you knit a Musselburgh hat? It has over 19000 projects on Ravelry! I was skeptical but thought it might be a good match for a skein I got in a lucky dip.

I’m sold. I’m never taking this hat off.

I like to do an unfinished project inventory on New Year's Day, and this year I realized I'd never gone through my yarn stash looking for stashed projects.

I found three (!!!) unfinished sock projects. One is an unfinished second sock (not pictured) packed into a bag with all the yarn needed to finish.

What's pictured is an experiment in making socks with crocheted cuffs, based on an Interweave pattern.

Mice don't just squeak, they sing: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/beyond-falsetto-do-mice-sing-ultrasonic-frequencies

But they sing higher notes than people can hear. If you have pet birds you can hear them sing. If you have pet mice, they're singing but you can't hear them.

Is there any way to make a device with a high-frequency mic and DSP that's cost-effective for individual mouse keepers, so you can hear mice singing in real time? Or are mics like that too expensive to make, research-only? #mice #rodents #singing

venite,

@dmarti there are affordable bat detectors, something like that could maybe help?
