Pet peeve: The phrase "Mac or PC".

  1. It implies that a Mac isn't a PC, which it absolutely is.

  2. It usually assumes that everything that isn't running a Mac OS is running Windows, which isn't true.

It is mostly annoying when we're talking about software/hardware/firmware compatibility, because when you're not using MacOS or Windows, it's often difficult to find out if you can use whatever the product is.

(Tech journalists really love this misclassification)

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@oli Absolutely, or variations thereof. I often have to dig though a lot of pages and links to find out exactly what something is compatible with. Most recently for a USB cryptographic device.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@mjjzf Yeah, for the home desktop market, I'd say that Apple and Amiga were ahead of the curve.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@oli Sometimes it says "Mac and Windows" which is at least a lot less ambiguous.

It still doesn't mean it doesn't work on Linux, it's just that the garbage software they bundle with it doesn't work, which is usually fine 😁

@schrockwell I remember we referred to them as IBM compatible 😄

Open source developers aren’t making their apps available as snaps… so Ubuntu is working on improved snap automation tools to do it for them.

@omgubuntu Yeah, there are too many competing standards. I picked one, and ignored the rest. For now anyway.

TIL, NL has an annual #bicycle ride along the 0 sea level line for #Climate

There's a surprising amount of #TheNetherlands below sea level...

@Ruth_Mottram @markmccaughrean My building's foundation is at just over 38 m above sea level, so it's practically the Highlands 😄

The numbers are still visible on the curb where they were written by the surveyors when they developed this area.

I live a few kilometres from the oldest and third largest airport in Norway. Although it is an order of magnitude less busy than the really big ones. (We really only have one big airport in this country.)

I deliberately picked a location to live away from the two main runways, but on warm summer days there are a lot of smaller propeller planes cruising around. It does get a bit annoying when you're having work meetings, and the propeller noise bleeds through all the time 😅

@Cqoicebordel Ouch!

This is also one of the main helicopter hubs for the North Sea, so there's that, too 😄

Summer vacation is getting closer every day, and I can now see the marked days in my timesheet scrolling into view at the bottom of the window.

ONLY THREE MORE WEEKS!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

I'm spending next week in Oslo for Oslo Pride, so it almost feels a little bit like vacation, although I'll be going into the office during the day 😁 :BlobhajPrideHeart:

If I want simple non invasive web analytics what would you recommend?

Currently using google analytics and I feel it's too much sometimes.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@torb @olafurw @aral I've seen non-invasive tools around, but can't remember any right now. I looked into a few for both my websites, but in the end chose to not collect any data at all.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@olafurw @torb @aral Ah, makes sense. And on GitHub pages you can't run anything server side to collect what you need either.

I'm trying to think of who on here I've seen post about nicer tools. There has been a few discussions lately ...

veronica, to space
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

If a human is exposed to raw space vacuum, they will not freeze any time soon. Vacuum is an excellent insulator, because there is no matter that can transport away your heat (convection), like in an atmosphere or liquid. Managing heat is actually a problem in space, especially with sunlight.

Rapid evaporation may cause cooling in certain parts of the body though.

Latest episode of Star Trek: SNW got this wrong, so has a lot of other shows, movies and books in the past.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@IngaLovinde I think in the book the Razorback was accelerating to stay ahead of the attackers, and for quite a long time. I cannot remember where the Rocinante was, but I remember noticing that in the show they simplified and shortened the whole segment quite a bit to make it fit in the episode.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@IngaLovinde I do have access to the episode, but I only skipped around. There was also this scene with Amos and Prax and the tools coming lose and almost killing them as the Rocinante turned during the battle, and the acceleration vector changing a lot.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@demi @nyrath the Armstrong Limit is at 63 hPa, or about 6.2% atmospheric pressure. It's the pressure where water boils at body temperature.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@JonSparks @kwantumkraut Ooh, forgot about that one.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@JonSparks That's a good point actually. I am not sure. They have always bothered me because there's something off about them. They have a few in Battlestar Galactica too. I would think there would be a lot of collisions, so they wouldn't stay like that for very long.

Side story: I had the opportunity to study these kind of fields for a PhD using simulation code, but in the end I chose a different direction. I sometimes regret it, because it sounds like a lot of fun!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@JonSparks I mean, it depends on what other external forces are present. In the episode, the asteroid field was in orbit of a planet, so it may have been an object torn up by the planet's gravitational field, so it wouldn't clump back together. There is a specific limit where this happens if the object enters an orbit below it.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@JonSparks Ah, yes. Roche limit it's called, which is what I thought. I just had to double check that I was remembering correctly and not mixing up all these names 😁

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@JonSparks I was thinking about that too, but I'm not sure rings are as dense as that either.

tyr, to StarTrek

i wonder what the largest single replicated item is in the star trek universe.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@purplepega @tyr DS9 at least reveals the existence of industrial replicators, used for critical infrastructure. So I would assume pretty big!
