I wrote about Google's AI search debacle, its leaked search ranking documents, and what they tell us about the future of the web https://www.platformer.news/google-ai-overviews-eat-rocks-glue-pizza/

@caseynewton great read!

So interesting to read the dystopic conclusion to Ben Thompson's framework of "Platform vs Aggregators" in the age of Gen AI: for the aggregator to squeeze the market so hard that it hurts itself.

Looks like we're walking towards the absolute opposite of the Web 3.0 dream (not the crypto bullshit, the semantic web)... all knowledge gobbled up in an inscrutable database, with zero discoverability for the little gems out there.

If you rely on public transportation to get around, @nileane explains why Transit is still the best app for this.

The UI and little touches in this app look incredible: https://www.macstories.net/reviews/transit-is-still-the-best-designed-transit-app-on-the-iphone-in-2024/

villasbc,

@luis_in_brief @viticci @nileane Yeah their cycling navigation is kind of lame, but I get the focus is on mass transit. Bike routing is hard

villasbc,
@villasbc@mastodon.social avatar

@luis_in_brief @viticci @nileane It does give you a route, which is good to know for example that sometimes taking the bike will be faster than waiting for the bus. And the route tends to stick to bike paths if they’re available, and it shows the quality of the lane, but I often ignore the proposed route and go for a more pleasant one I know to be possible

The Taylor Swift harassment campaign on X is a warning. These same tools are already being used to harass average people across lots of platforms, and the response from tech companies and lawmakers hasn't been nearly good enough https://www.platformer.news/taylor-swift-deepfake-nudes-x/

@caseynewton I heard it first from Algorithmic Fairness researchers: justice is not scalable. What a situation to be in when the only instrument available is a broad policy stroke.

The amount of geeks who think "is permitted by physics" means a space settlement issue is "not a problem" is bizarre! No, we are not going to build an entire civilization on a vast banked racetrack on Mars. I am prepared to take bets on this!

Does the word "cyborg" imply in particular a human-machine combination?

villasbc,
@villasbc@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I think it’s more useful to define it for humans only, and then let usage extend them to other creatures. Like zombies imply humans, but if you say “zombie dog” people will immediately get it.

The broader definition would be littered with asterisks and exceptions. Like, is a plant on a pot with an humidity sensor and automatic watering a cyborg?

ZachWeinersmith, to random
@ZachWeinersmith@mastodon.social avatar

Where do you draw the line between AI you like and dislike? My sense is there's a serious disdain for e.g. generative art or text, but not for other machine-learning stuff, like plant ID apps or speech to text software.

Inventory management should just not exist in video games. Nobody wants to do it, all it does is add frustration and overhead.

Let me pick up whatever I want and just give me sorting options!

villasbc,
@villasbc@mastodon.social avatar

@imyke I liked the way tibia handled it: it’s not the amount of items that counts, but their weight. Knights being able to carry more items then mages made part of the game mechanics and it wasn’t just a matter of “you’ve exhausted your square boxes”

Hey mathstodon, help me understand something. What does Hilbert mean when he argues that to prove the existence of a mathematical concept, you only have to prove that if it existed you arrive at no contradiction.

@StillPaisleyCat I could not be less worried. Did anything really undesirable happen in Australia after similar legislation?

Some deals are made, some cash flows differently and soon enough things are pretty much the same as before.

villasbc,

@StillPaisleyCat Yeah it makes total sense. I do wonder if that’s superficial analysis and there is really something important to do differently from Australia.
