Whatever happens next, and if there's nothing more, the team he's building to leave behind, it's a gigantic legacy already. We just can't ask for more.
So, private companies in the space business 🤷. Thursday a Texas based company called Intuitive Machines landed on the moon. It did not go smoothly. The live feed was abruptly halted. It was unclear what happened. Then the company said they were getting a faint signal. People speculated the spacecraft had tipped over. Hours later the company announced it was upright! Friday their stock jumped wildly, but after the market closed, they held a press conference, and said it had tipped over.🤔
I’ve been re-reading all my history books about the Nazis. One thing that strikes me is how hard it was to fight back against Nazism from inside. The normative culture is so strong and everybody is just going along. Ordinary folks, with denouncing their neighbours to the Gestapo. The Gestapo was tiny only 32k. It was the ordinary people that were informing on their neighbours. Ordinary people enabled Nazism.
It's a far more complex mechanism than just the Nazis doing things. The Nazis of course are criminals and bear the full responsibility of what they did. At the same time, they couldn't have done as much damage if they had met a political party resolved to stand against them, informing and educating the public about the Nazi threat.
@kcarruthers@blogdiva@glightly Obviously voting for the lesser of two evils is sometimes the logical tactical decision. But that's not rhe same thing as voting for Biden unconditionally, accepting anything that makes the lesser evil look less lesser, imposing no boundaries.
Way too many people are unable to distinguish the tactical from the strategic.
Nice! One of them commenting about the relatively obscure Jupiter Ace. (a spin-off product by a former Sinclair Research engineering duo, who went on to build a cousin of the ZX Spectrum, with a built-in Forth interpreter in system ROM instead of BASIC)
The US was the lone vote against a #ceasefire resolution, with the UK abstaining. The US and UK are expected to be virtually alone again at the ICJ hearings in urging restraint in its ruling on Israel’s occupation.
Jayden Danns intervenes for the first time in the Premier League who sets up the ball for Gakpo, Gakpo cannot hold it, and Elliott gets a perfect ball from the rebound, sending it deep into the back of the net.
Got brunch with a dear friend who is a psych professor at a public university and so is deeply affected by state laws passing restricting what they can teach; we talked a great deal about the laws in her state that include not questioning "meritocracy." Every aspect of psychology that has informed a more just and holistic understanding of human ability, entire subfields of our work that include important evidence about underestimation and misestimation in achievement systems, disallowed.
@grimalkina There has to be a more apt term to describe what they're doing than "a new dark age" but I can't think of one that isn't an offensive epithet.
In the meantime, limited but heroic glimpses of hope emerge:
