Yeah, I kind of assumed that. But the people using it appropriately make it worth it.

Unfortunately, tech companies hiring bootcamp graduates and treating them as equivalent to a college hire was a zero interest rate phenomenon.

Often when reading books written in the past we excuse all sorts of misogynist crap because the writers were "of their time".

I just reread "Dune" for the first time since my teen years. One thing that struck me was that the female characters were strong, and there was little male gaze.

Another similar work of SF from the same period that similarly would raise no eyebrows today was H Beam Piper's "Omnilingual".

@ucblockhead

A lot of Piper’s work has fairly strong female characters.

Hype cycle meets rinse cycle: does my dishwasher really need a mobile app?

Years later than you might have expected, given my line of work, I've finally hit the dubious milestone of owning a major appliance with its own Internet Protocol address and mobile app--the Bosch dishwasher we procured as part of an overdue and immensely-appreciated kitchen renovation. I didn't pick this 300-series SHE53C85N model because of that connected-home possibility. (I try not to use…

I LOLed. Explain that to yourself of 20 years ago.

Just went and ordered a new mirrorless camera to replace my 10+ years old Olympus PN-2 and Nikon D5300.

I spent a week researching, got advice on reddit, then waited a week to make sure I really wanted to do it.

The gating function was that I'm taking some family to Longwood Gardens in April and I want to have the best camera possible for taking pictures of dragonflies and waterlilies.

Now I'm twitching as I wait for delivery.

The adapter just puts the back of the lens as far from the sensor as it would be on a slr.

I have a Z6ii. If you’re into artistic lenses the LensBaby ones are fun.

The EU decided to create a bunch of laws to penalize and make it easier to fine US big tech companies with the Biden administration’s stance being “we don’t like them either.”

This is one of the few policy successes of the leftists on Biden.

A common sign a software project is going to fail is when it has too many people working on it.

If that is unintuitive to you, consider the image below. This is why some companies are finding themselves to be more instead of less productive after layoffs.

Modern appliances are rarely built to last. They could learn something from the KitchenAid stand mixer. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2024/02/kitchenaid-stand-mixer-durability/677524/?gift=lXYKxj_TVbvBJumoueZhMGhVEVFWAzdznnls_YUKo6g

Seconds 0 - 10: I can have a phone call on my watch! Which is on my wrist! This is amazing! I am living in the future for sure!
