BREAKING: area high school students have engaged in a coordinated walkout and are blocking Mass Ave outside

UPDATE: Protestors at the MIT encampment just knocked down the barricades MIT had erected to pin it in. Supporters streamed in and formed a human chain to protect the encampment.

Powerful moment as the crowd falls quiet except for a solitary voice in song. (and briefly, a pitiful counter protestor with a bullhorn)

MIT encampment organizers just asked community members to stay the night to protect the camp.

Meanwhile, the youth blockade on Mass Ave is still going strong. An even younger person (7 or 8?) is now leading chants.

@palestine While pro-Israel counter protestors gather across the street, we will not be intimidated. Until Palestine is free, we will chant, scream, and sing together: "Let Gaza Live! NOT IN OUR NAME!"

As American Jews, we know does not represent us. We keep trying to tell this to Rep. Katherine Clark (MA-05) but she won’t listen.

If she would, she'd realize that the McCarthyite “Antisemitism Awareness Act” she voted for yesterday does nothing to keep us safe. In fact, it does the opposite.

We know that crackdowns on free expression have always ended up being used to target Jews. We know that Jewish safety cannot come at the expense of Palestinian freedom. We know we will not be free until everyone is free.

Rep. Clark, we’re begging you: stop ignoring the voices of your Jewish constituents who are pleading for peace. We need you to , and stand up for the freedom and safety of Jews and Palestinians, in your district and around the world.

URGENT: Within hours, Congress will vote on legislation that criminalizes student protest under the guise of fighting antisemitism. Write your rep now and tell them to vote NO on this authoritarian campus crackdown.

IfNotNow's statement on House passage of the Antisemitism Awareness Act:

As American Jews, we see this McCarthyite crackdown on speech under the guise of Jewish safety as extremely dangerous. We know that Jewish safety cannot come at the expense of Palestinian freedom. Jewish safety and Palestinian safety are inextricably intertwined. This bill would criminalize criticism of Israel on college campuses in the name of protecting American Jews, but its impact would be the opposite. (1/2)

ifnotnowboston,
@ifnotnowboston@mastodon.social avatar

Fearmongering by political and communal leaders and right-wing organizations like AIPAC overrode the strong opposition of the ACLU, Jewish representatives including Jerry Nadler, and even Kenneth Stern, the author of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which was codified in the bill. President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Schumer should make clear their opposition to this attempt to stifle the pro-peace, antiwar movement. (2/2)

BREAKING: City Council passes ceasefire resolution 11-2

@ifnotnowboston@mastodon.social avatar

IfNotNow condemns the police and vigilante attacks on student encampments at Columbia, CCNY, & UCLA.

From college presidents to Congress to the White House, our leaders must stop targeting students and heed their call to end institutional support for Israel’s assault on Palestinians.

ifnotnowboston,
@ifnotnowboston@mastodon.social avatar

Instead, members of Congress are fearmongering about the protests in order to rush through a bill that would criminalize criticism of Israel in the name of protecting U.S. Jews.

As U.S. Jews, we reject this. Jewish safety cannot come at the expense of Palestinian freedom.

“I was taken to Nashua Street jail where they did strip search me and held me there for about 5 to 6 hours,” Shinkle-Stolar told @gbhnews Monday. “Although that was a terrible experience for me, it is nothing compared to what Palestinians in , the West Bank and even Israel proper are experiencing on a daily basis under occupation, apartheid and the ruthless genocidal assault that Israel has laid on all of them.”

HAPPENING NOW: At Northeastern, Jewish students & community members are observing Havdalah, marking the transition from Shabbat to a new week of fighting for liberation. We are here in solidarity w/ the students putting their bodies on the line to fight for Palestinian freedom.

A Jewish undergrad from Northeastern: “I want to reiterate why we are here... It has been over 200 days of genocide in Gaza. Over 30,000 people have been killed & there has yet to be progress made toward a lasting ceasefire. Every action we do, including this, is to end this violence.”

Students are sharing about the false charge of antisemitism, how footage revealed the hateful words used to justify arrests came from pro-Israel counter-protestors. The encampments have been places of community & commitment to justice: a reflection of the world we want to see.
