I've just been thinking and musing, and I want to share my uninformed opinion. 😅

It's kind of interesting that while this platform (Mastodon and the fediverse at large) is far more vibrant and bustling than it ever has been in any point in its history, people feel obligated to post about how this place is bad and it's dying because it's bad or the people are bad somehow.

I've seen a lot of this after the initial Twitter Exodus waves died down. A lot of people sort of demanded the same level of clout or engagement they had (or imagined they had) of their prior platform.

And some complained. Maybe they complained about the fact that they no longer had as many followers or that it was missing key features or whatever. So they came and left, and quite a few of them went back to Twitter or went somewhere else.

Was typing an email to my organization's CEO and Board of Directors, and Fishy somehow managed to walk across the keyboard AND press send. 10/10 he is a very productive cat, definitely has upper management potential.

My tuxedo cat Fishy looking up at the camera, he is a handsome devil.

3.5 years of constant caution and sacrifice, withholding dinners at restaurants & concerts, and I let one professional event encourage me to take needless risks. I spoke in a room with 80 people without a mask. I asked the event planner to have air filters in the room, but she said "their effectiveness for Covid prevention is limited," which is, of course, BS, and that should've been when I withdrew from the event. I let my guard down, and now I have my first infection. Be safe out there!

Woah, they're doing a coup in Russia. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/06/23/russia-war-ukraine-based-on-lie-yevgeny-prigozhin/ (EDIT: non-paywalled link: https://archive.ph/zdagh )

Wagner's chief (aka the only remotely good military over there) is moving against Putin. This being the same "elite military" branch that Putin basically sent out to die in Ukraine, so, um, I imagine they have grievances.

EDIT: The people replying to this are much smarter about tank-and-gun stuff than I am, so for better context of what's tanking and gunning over there please see replies, heh

@glassbottommeg They were the ones the Ukrainian military chewed up in Bakhmut for several months. They just sent waves on men in there and few of the men left that area alive.

Internet search sucks now.

Making a classic "search engine" requires obscene amounts of money and resources, so creating direct competition is not a realistic option.

But what if we had a way to each take our own personal bookmarks and link collections, and share them, using a federated protocol?

My fifty sites, your sixty-five links, some friends and their contributions... All hand-selected and vetted, manually tagged and organized by real people... Hosted on small, volunteer-run servers...

What if web search results were organized not by "how many ad dollars did this site generate for the search company" but rather something like "someone you know directly tagged this site, and someone twice-removed tagged this other site so it's lower priority"?

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@mordremoth Back in the day (the 90s) they had a name for this. It was called a directory. IIRC it's how Yahoo got its start.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing a revival of this reinvented for the modern federated web.
